i think no player in history could give a team a piggyback ride like he did through his entire career.

too bad. he is going to have to write off more than $25million that the team owes him from the agreement he entered when he tried to save the team financially. When he leaves Pittsburgh, it is estimated that his net worth is going to be less than $10million, including his house. In contrast, Gretzky is worth about $212 million and Alexandre Daigle, who is much younger, has a net worth of over $12 million. That's sad.

In hindsight, no wonder he sulked when he got drafted by the Pens in 1984. Remember how he got vilified for that? Despite that, he became a lifelong Pen. And then paid the price. Go figure - imagine if he'd have done a Lindros!

Very first thought that popped into my mind.

As I recall, the first time Mario retired it was early into a long term guaranteed contract. Then when the Pens ran into $$ problems and they couldn't pay him, he got part of the team. Shrewd.

And where are you getting these numbers from? I highly doubt with the upcoming sale of the Penguins that Lemieux's net worth will be less then $10 million.
not sure exactly how the lemieux group is structured, but i know Lemieux is personally responsible for all the debts and yet his ownership is shared... that being, his partners will walk away with more money after the sale than he would...there was an article on this last fall in sports illustrated that i read at the dentist's.

i think he signed a personal guarantee on the debt warrants for the hockey club. at the sale of the club, he will have to clear up all of the team's debts with his own money. apparently there was close to 100% financing on the team.

you don't think the heart condition is stress related?

personally, i think he retired so that he can focus on a strategy to either save his ass by saving the penguins or by mitigating the losses in any way he can (moving players, sale of the team, etc..) it does sound like a sale, though... he is selling it without a reserve bid price and has a deadline to sell it within.
