Rookies on defense and cheap 4th line and cheap backup. The 3 players of the 23 who don't play should be dirt cheap. That is about 9 players. The other 14 players is what powers the ship

Let's say these 9 players are at 800 grand each or about 7 mill total. Add Leafs top 3 of tavaras matthews marner avg 11 mill each for 33 mill and you have 43 mill left from 83 cap for 11 remaining players averaging about 4 mill per. Sounds reasonable.

You have players like Rielly and Kadri in that range. Nylander at 7 but you also have Hyman at 2 to balance. Another reason why Hyman is so valuable

Leafs sign Andreas Borgman 1 year $700,000.
They now have 17 players under contract with 6 more to go, $14,165,301 in cap space.

Ya but 5 years ago the Leafs were rebiulding and somewhere in there, tanking for Matthews. Also the game has changed, more skill, skill, skill. Less fighting, less scrums after the whistle. Heck even less hitting.

Five years ago this coming June (2019), the Maple Leafs were selecting
William Nylander (7th overall), 4 years ago, Mitch Marner (4th), 3 years ago, Auston Matthews.
Toronto has certainly emphasized skill over tenacity, testosterone and truculence the past 5 drafts, in the 1st round, anyway.
It's fairly easy to see which selections in later rounds were touted by Hunter and which by Dubas.
Most of the Coke machines are out of the organization already, or were never signed to ELC's.

Ya, still we have the $1.5M Kessel retained salary hanging over Dubas' head.

$1,200,000, but you were close.
That trade has worked very well for both clubs.
The $1.2Mm annually (3 more seasons) a fine investment, if you ask Dubas.

With McLaren onboard Orr didn't have to fight. Same with Domi when Belak came on. Orr and McLaren made the Leafs better. They put fear in other teams. They beat up the Canadians when at the time Montreal was known as smurfs. But those are different times. Martin didn't make the Leafs better.

That smurf line Leafs had was tough to watch. I would say Petan is the weak link there. Line looks much better with Gauthier. Have to have balance on a line. Can't have all smurfs who play the same way.

Makes me sick. Hopefully by the time playoffs roll around they have spent their load.

Are you kidding? Petan is way better than Gauthier. Better skater, plays more physical and with more energy. The only thing Gauthier does better than him is win face offs. I thought the Petan-Moore-Ennis line was playing well and now Babcock breaks them up and puts in Gauthier tonight. Ugh.

Kirk, can I call you Kirk? On the winning goal 3 players converge on Marchand along the boards, Marchand protects the puck backhand pass to Bergeron in the slot wide open shot goal. That duo is unstoppable. Add Pasternak and forget about it. And Bergeron is also a master defender.

Of course Petan is more skilled than Gauthier. But he's also 8 inches shorter and probably 50 lbs lighter. If it was purely about skill certainly put Petan in there. But having 3 small guys on the same line is hard to watch. Especially in their own end.

Marchand is 5'9" 181 lbs and plays like he is 6'3" 220 lbs.

Our center is 6'3" 220 lbs and plays like he is 5'9" 181 lbs.
That's because he'll lick you if you go near him. Who wants to get an std playing hockey.
Aren't you the one who thinks Marner sucks cause he is small and gets knocked off the puck?
