He can pull a Tavaras and leave once his contract is up and in his prime. Imagine every team in the league bidding. He'll get max dollars.
Assuming Marner signs in the $10 million+ range those 4 players will consume almost half the cap. Can you field a competitive team if you have $43m to sign 19 players?
Marleau and Kadri together are another $11 million just on their own.
If he goes completely AWOL during the playoffs again this year would those count as games played?

Where you used to pay for past performance and then instantly regret it when they never put up the same peak numbers again, they now pay for “potential” and UFA years.
7 mill Willy got overpaid for 60 points, two years in a row and still will be overpaid.
Auston is definitely elite as a goal scorer but I don’t see him being a top five points producer in he NHL so it is a little overpayment but this is a great deal for both. I would feel uneasy if it was a max 8 year deal because I am not certain about his health or his super elite status and to pay him as such.

And it is easily argued that Marner is right there but isn’t getting full credit. Marner drives this team.
Willy got paid top 20 money but isn’t in the top 20 best wingers.
Austin got top 5 money, but isn’t in the top five best centres in the league.
Marner will get top 15 - 20 money but I think he is firmly one of the top 20 wingers in the game.

Looks like Marner’s contract talks will be quite interesting. Marner’s agent told the media this evening the reason talks have been put off till the end off the year is that in preliminary discussions Dubas attempted to low ball Marner with an offer that was deemed completely unacceptable. Add in the fact that Marner’s agent has lost trust in the Leafs and Dubas as when Marner was negotiating his entry level contract he was told the Leafs don’t offer first round picks any bonus money so none was given, however a year later Matthews was able to pry out some bonus money as part of his entry level contract. If that wasn’t enough when Dubas was told of Marner’s agents comments he stated Marner will get only what the Leafs think he’s worth, nothing more nothing less. This coming from a Toronto Star article.
As far as the bonus money goes apparently Marner’s agent was told the Leafs don’t give out schedule B bonuses but they then gave one to Matthews so I guess Marner’s agent is a little pissed at Dubas. I’d like to know how much Dubas offered as an opening offer.
You over estimate leafs ability to not turn the puck over trying to carry it through the trap each and every time.
The stretch pass is not to get 100% breakaway home alone. It is a defensive play with offensive upside. Puck is in offensive zone quick with zero chance of odd man rush coming back.
Jersey won the cup that way when teams had no choice but to carry it though the trap due to 2 line passes being illegal at the time.
Speaking of hits, I remember watching this game when Clarke laid out Bruce Bell. The youtube comments are hilarious!
After Clarke knocks him out, they just left him there on the ice and everyone gathered around to watch Clarke fight. Completely ignoring the guy unconscious on the ice.

He doesn’t get the respect nor the credit compared to Auston, but I think he will finish as a better Leaf.
He plays like a centre and drives his line mates and is decent defensively. I see his game evolving to carrying more of a load and more well rounded.
He's already killing penalties and plays every game. Not sure we should overwork him. He's only slightly bigger than Dave Keon who was exempt from some practice sessions.
BTW: There's a Raptor who sits out something like 1 in 5 games because of "load management".
Quite likely that Marner is given an offer sheet in the off season. Leafs will have no choice but to match. They can't work on a deal right now because Marner has instructed his agent no negotiating within the season, he doesn't want the distraction.
