CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A man’s open letter to the woman who called the police to report a “creepy guy” in the park is gaining attention online.

David Updike says he was taking a walk in the park with his camera when a neighbor spotted him and feared he was taking pictures of children.

He says she took his picture and reported a “creepy guy” to police.

Updike says six police officers showed up and cornered him on the sidewalk where he was questioned for 20 minutes.

The man was upset by the accusations and decided to write an open letter to the woman who called police.

Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday was a beautiful day, I think you will agree. I decided to take a short walk from my house on Hamilton Street to Dana Park, which I have been coming to almost daily since 1989, the year my son was born. As I often do, I brought my camera, sat on a bench for about 10 minutes, did one lap around the park and headed home.

I had barely gotten across the street when three police cars pulled up: I was told to stop, and swiftly surrounded by six policemen. I was “detained” there for approximately 20 minutes and questioned; another officer returned to the park to find out why you had called them.

My suspected crime, apparently, was having a camera in a public park, and allegedly taking pictures of children. As it turned out, I had taken no pictures that day. But I have been photographing in this neighborhood for 30 years, and have published a children’s book of poems and photographs, always with permission.

The policeman returned and wanted to see my “flip phone,” and then asked me if I knew how he knew I had a flip phone: I didn’t. He knew, he told me, because the woman who called the police had taken a picture of ME, sitting on the bench, and shown him the picture. They then took away my phone, scrolled through the few pictures that were on it.

They continued to hover around me asking questions. As it happened, I was standing near the house where my son now lives, and when my wife appeared, walking down the street after work, and saw me standing in front of his house with six policemen, she instantly feared something terrible had happened to our son. She was shaking, and I explained the situation. She is an English teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School; I am a college professor of English. Our son spent much of the first 15 years of his life in Dana Park.

You must be new in the neighborhood. I am often in the park, on foot or on a bike, talking to friends who have children who play in the playground. I know you were standing very near to me for the entire time I was on the bench, though I could not figure out why. Now I know: you were taking my picture.

Suggestion: the next time you suspect someone is up to no good, perhaps you should say hello, speak to them first and, if still anxious, ask what they are taking pictures of. That’s what people do in a neighborhood park: talk to each other. This would save someone the humiliation and degradation of being stopped and held by the police, and might save the police from wasting their time when they could be doing something more useful, like managing the daily mayhem in Central Square.

The fact that you now have my picture in your phone is both sadly ironic and, well, creepy. Could you please delete it?

Your neighbor,

— David Updike, Hamilton Street

I think that guy is an idiot. It is suspicious for a lone man to take pictures of children in the park. If it was so normal, then the cops wouldn't have done anything.

A women can easily bring the police's attention to any
guy she can identify. All it takes is just a phone call.

Except he wasn't taking any pictures. He was a man walking in a park. So now a man has to walk accompanied if he wants to take pictures?

Is this what we have come to?

Re-read the article, you missed a very important point.

Lots of weirdos in parks. In a way, I don't blame the woman. However, I do feel sympathy for the innocent man.

If you are an adult male, you have to accept that you can not walk around with a camera where there might be kids or else you get the hard stares from every adult around you. It does suck, but it is just a minor inconvenience, there are bigger problems out there than not being able to walk around freely with a camera.

Me I never carry a camera around, if there are kids around I prefer to avoid them altogether if possible.

Well that is quite silly considering pretty much EVERY MALE in the developed world and MOST of the developing world now walk around with high resolution cameras capable of taking both video and pictures..

British Airways descriminated against men banning them from sitting near children on flights. the airline was sued and they drop that anti-male rule

First society was anti female. where women were considered inferior sex and incapable of holding male estabilished jobs. Now society is becoming anti male where every man is considered a creep.

Every cellphone now adays has a camera. If there is an incident in public, basically every person can pull out a cellphone an d start taking video.

This lady does realize women can be pedophiles too, right?

As with most BS in this world, it is not about actually deterring perverts from taking pictures of kids but the surface appearance of stopping perverts from taking pictures of kids. If a pervert really wants to take pictures of kids, no one would be able to see the camera.

Anyways it is all PC BS.

Back 50 years ago, if you a kid came up to you and you punted the kid down the block, you would be characterized as a monster. Now, if a kid comes up to you and you talk to the kid, then you are characterized as a pedophile. I would rather be known as a kid punter than a pedophile if I had the choice. Thankfully there is a solution, just avoid kids and if you do need to talk to them; you keep it short and hostile.

Guys, just listen to the news over a 12 month period and you will notice how many crimes are committed in our parks. All kinds of crimes.

Crimes have always been committed wherever they are normally committed. Crime has not increased, infact overall crime has decreased, it is just that now everyone who is a victim or a witness to a crime can post up videos and pictures online and make everyone aware. It gives the false impression that there is more crime, when it is just that we are made more aware of crimes because of the internet.

It's funny because we're about 2 generations away from people recording every moment of there life. Our children's children will laugh at us when they find out we made a big deal about things like this
