Yes, following legal orders given by a police officer is highly recommended. But even at the best of times, it can take a few seconds to comply. Perhaps longer if you aren't yet certain that the people giving you the orders are police officers. Certainly nobody should expect to be shot within five seconds of the order being given unless there is imminent threat of harm.I won't bother to read through 8 pages of opinion...But here is mine. When a cop orders you to put down your weapon...you do it. Maybe in other countries they don't listen to the police. My parents who were born and raised here as was i, always told us to listen and obey the police. Period. You don't get shot hat way.
I don't know but I just read your only reply and seems about right so I am skipping the rest of the thread too.Haven't we seen this thread before? The police kill someone who had a weapon. The usual suspects on Terb then line up on the usual sides. Side one - second guess the police and assume that they had no good reason to shoot. Side two - assume the police can do no wrong and assume that brandishing a small knife justifies leathal use of force by officers. Side three - point out that we do not know exactly what happened and therefore the comments are based substantially on speculation. Sides one and two then double down on their positions.
I have not read most of the thread. Did I miss a side?

He could be 'innocent' but high or mentally-challenged. Any normal thinking criminal would put the knife down. However, like I said, cops aren't going to risk their lives unnecessarily if they don't have to in situations like these. When the cops told him to drop the knife many times, why didn't he? He moved forward toward the doors with the knife still in his hand and was not following police instructions! Why the hell not? Why does everyone try to portray these teens as innocent?
i haven't seen any posters calling him innocent. but there is a difference between being innocent and deserving to dieWhen the cops told him to drop the knife many times, why didn't he? Yes, the penalty for ignoring a police officer is death independent whether there is a risk. The kid was in Canada two years - maybe he thought the cop was saying 'hand me the knife !'When a cop orders you to put down your weapon...you do it.
Division of labour. Most cops will never pull their gun. When they do hitting generally in the right area is good enough. Especially if four or five of them are shooting. Are you serious? I'd want to be the most proficient so that if a true situation was encountered, I'd be that more confidant in its use.
And there's the double tap tactic. That sad day our finest employed it 4 times in sequence, plus a half double tap. Most cops will never pull their gun. When they do hitting generally in the right area is good enough. Especially if four or five of them are shooting.
When the cops need to take an accurate well placed shot they call in the ETF/SWAT guys to do that.
While I agree that the firearm training standard for police is low, your proposed scenario would result in higher taxes and fewer cops on the street. How about if we raise the standards to be a cop? How about if they had to get a degree and demonstrate lateral problem solving instead of the poor standards and 3 month course they currently have to do? They all make over 100k with juicy overtime and a diamond plated pension. Plus they have no accountability. Expect this incident to be swept under the rug, just like the G20 debacle.
Better educated cops might just be the answer instead of the jarheads currently working as glorified construction zone supervisors for $60/hr at overtime.
Double taps are almost exclusively used in the realm of competition. Police and even soldiers are taught that if they make the decision to shoot, they shoot as many times as necessary until the threat is stopped. I wonder if in light of these events, people will start supporting the idea of magazine limits for police, after all, if that's supposed to slow down trigger happy active shooters, maybe it will slow down trigger happy cops? And there's the double tap tactic. That sad day our finest employed it 4 times in sequence, plus a half double tap.
You keep working hard to prove what an idiot you are. What makes you think a streetcar can contain the shrapnel and blast effect of a bombIf he had a bomb with a dead man switch and he was isolated inside a streetcar seems like a good opportunity to take him out. Better he blew up a streetcar than a cop.
However the report is he had a knife not a bomb.
qft...the other angle to these sorts of situations is...if a criminal carrying a gun were confronted by police, they may conclude shooting first is their only chance of surviving.
Or they could just drop the gun.The other angle to these sorts of situations is...if a criminal carrying a gun were confronted by police, they may conclude shooting first is their only chance of surviving.
