Hey guys (you too ladies), what are the major workplace changes you have seen in your career? Here are my top 5 major changes:
1) No smoking.
2) Political correctness (e.g no hugging policy:().
3) Desktop computers and working remotely.
4) No long term tenure.
5) No defined benefit pensions (unless government).

No more screaming at incompetents, and firing them on the spot.

No more drinking (as much) at lunch and driving back to the office.

More foreigners (they call it "ethnic diversity") in the office.

Ladies wearing trousers.

Husbands allowing their wives to work.

People avoiding taking lunch breaks in order to avoid being targeted by management as "slackers".

Decline in having a drink over lunch, when going out for lunch.

No pensions. (Some contributions to a defined-contribution plan.)

Management expecting you to be responsive to emails and phone messages long past work hours due to work-issued Blackberry.

But no overtime for it.

Affirmative action. I'm going to another country, and steal someone else's job, and we'll see how they like it!!!

Yes, the Blackberry has changed how we work. The good thing is that a father can take his son/daughter to their soccer game and still stay in touch with the office. The bad thing is you get a message while you are at an SC to come to the office ASAP:(. Welcome to the 24/7 office.

Globalization rocks! It allows us to focus where we have a comparative advantage.

Oh yes, outsourcing. At first it was outsourcing to local service providers but then it was to India and the Phillipines.
Now that you mention it, I just watched a movie called "outsourced" where a NA white guy had his call centre closed and all the jobs outsourced to india. He was tasked with going there and training them.

Then at the end of the movie, that call centre was closed to be outsourced to China. The kicker was: india was 10x cheaper than NA then China was 10x cheaper than india......

The number one change in corporate attitude is the disposable nature of employees. When I worked for Canadian Tire, it wasn't uncommon for people to start working there out of highschool or college and retire there. When I was laid off, the average term employee had dropped from 30 yrs to 5.

As another one posted: the expectation to work through lunches, late into the night, and weekends with zero compensation.

When I left the corporate world to go indy, I vowed never to work for 'the man' ever again. I put in (on average) 80 - 100 hrs per week, sometimes as much as 120 and was only compensated for 37.5. One time I had (dared) take a full week's vacation to Mexico and didn't get the shits until I got back. I was off for 4 days. The boss called me into his office and asked how I was going to make up the time (as I'd used up my 5 sick days that year). I grabbed my daytimer and added up the hours I'd logged daily and said to him:

I'll make up the 4 days, if you make up for the days I worked overtime.....He said: ok, how much? I said: well, as of today (december 23) you owe me 5 months....he said BULLSHIT I said here, and handed him my daytimer with the hours written in each day. I said FYI? That's admissable as evidence in court if you want to press it.........

India currently has a language advantage over China, although that might be changing fast. Many EI's speak English (albeit sometimes with a thick accent), but the Chinese could be closing that gap.

Our company uses a large Bay Street law firm. We recently found out that they "outsource" quite a bit of their "grunt" research work to an affiliate law firm in India. This work use to be done by articling students here in Canada.

- VPN and laptops have now made it possible to work from home (yay)

....it has developed the race to the bottom all the 1st world economies are in...

But first world standards of living are rising, not falling. If low value work could not be outsourced, it would limit how much the standard of living could rise. It is not pleasant to lose your career because it can now be outsourced, but it has an overall benefit to both countries. Unfortunately, the benefits are not distributed evenly within the outsourced from country.
