I am not big into Indian food and have hardly visited any Indian restaurants. But some friends persuaded me to try a South Indian Restaurant in Scarborough. Did so for the first time and I tried dishes like Masala Dosa etc. It was reasonably priced and I enjoyed it. Will definitely be visiting this restaurant again when I am in the area. No wonder it is always quite crowded although not very fancy looking. But they have more a lot of tables in a separate room where big groups congregate. This is it:

Bombay Palace in Brampton, or even the Bombay Palace downtown, are great.

The Host in the Annex (near Bay and Bloor) is expensive, but quite good.

Others mentioned India Taste, which is really good.

Sketchy location (near airport strip and million Dollar Saloon) is Tandoori Nites on Torbram.

A few of my favorites

Adrak - In Richmond Hill. One of the better looking Indian restaurants with great authentic food

Dum Phukt in Markham http://www.dumpukht.ca/ - Great food. You must try the Biryani. The service has been getting better overtime but could still use some improvement.

Avani in Mississauga http://www.avani.ca/ I have never been but recommended from people I trust.

Desi Spice at Finch and Hwy. 27,
buffet at a great price, and judging by the number of EI customers that frequent it, must be worth a visit.

This is hands down the best Indian I have tried in the GTA. Located in downtown Oakville.

The place is pretty small. If you don't make reservations I'd suggest getting there by 5:30 max or you will be waiting for a table.

Thanks everyone! Lots of great choices that I've never heard of. I hope to get to all of them some day!

I was in Brampton with the family last night and we went to the other Tandoori Flame on Dixie. Describing it as the Indian Mandarin is pretty accurate, except that I don't see a lot of Asian people in Mandarin, but almost everyone else in Tandoori Flame was Indian. And the food was wonderful. If you're going, check out their website--when you join their "eklub" (http://tandooriflame.com/) you get a coupon for a free meal! It's not good on weekends, holidays or the month of December but it worked fine yesterday.

The best in Toronto used to be just off Dupont St. I cannot remember the name, have not been there for many years,

Chauhan's used to be located where Dum Phukt has now taken over. Dum Phukt have completely renovated it, and turned it into a more fine dining Indian restaurant.
Although it is a more central and busy location at Woodbine, apparently Chauhan's business was hurt by India's Taste opening just up the road from it. That is why it seems that they moved to a more remote location.

But another restaurant close to The Host (South Of Highway 7) in Richmond Hill is Bombay Bhel. The Host is good for the buffet, but the a la carte that is not offered during the evenings is not really that good. That is where Bombay Bhel excels in:

Oh! Forgot all about Bombay Bhel...one of the few reasons I like Markham aside from mind-boggling romps and visits to George’s Trains.

and if you're not so down with fine dining and AYCE restaurants, there is a small indian restaurant by markham rd. North of Steeles. on the west side called India sweets...that's where I get my Indian dessert fix, samosa, and takehome food on my way home...pretty good family ran business...and btw...I also like Sri Lankan food but my gut can't handle the spice...

Also, there is an authentic Indo-Portugese restaurant that I visited ages ago. If you love Pork, then the way they cook it is amazing. Apparently they were closed, so I do not know if they are now open, as I went to Mississauga last month and a co-worker mentioned that they were renovating it. But that type of cooking is unique and their beef patties are the best that I have ever tasted:

The only downside is the very slow and crowded Highway 7 once you arrive in Markham. There is always non-stop construction and bus lanes in Markham. That is the only reason I regularly use the 407 until I arrive very close to the destination. :(

The non-stop construction seems to have eased up the last few times I was in the area. Maybe I was just lucky. Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions!

I refuse to eat Indian buffet - only a la carte for me - just a different experience and I will never visit Tandoori Flame (a friend of mine had a bad experience there).
