One of my clients, who is a high school teacher was so annoyed because one of his students handed in an essay using "LOL" a few times.

School standards must be dropping lol :p

I guess the question is this.....if its in the dictionary, is it now proper english? If there is one thing the english language is, its constantly evolving. Its adda and subtracts words, phrases and acronyms all the time. If it was used in context, or in the form of a quote.......

Not if it's slang. In a dictionary yes, but proper for a formal paper - no, unless the context dictates otherwise.

As a college professor, I unfortunately see more and more "text speak" in my students work. They just don't seem to be able to discern between APA written format and the slang they use in the real world. Unfortunately for those who don't learn, it's the real world that hires them, or not, and that lesson is much harsher than any of mine.
