If you are asking for best skilled or creative player you should add Alex Lifeson.

I guess you guys really love your folk and blues, otherwise there's no understanding the list so far.

Neil Young isn't a great guitar player, he's a great songwriter and performer.

Joni Mitchell was a creative guitarist, employing many elaborate alternative tunings, but doesn't credit herself as a great guitarist. Again, she's a unique and creative songwriter and performer.

Domenic Troiano was a "one-trick pony" bluesman, known principally as a session player. Unless you are a huge "Night Heat" fan, I don't understand his inclusion.

Jeff Healy was a great blues player for a blind guy, but his singing was terrible and his musical taste just as bad. A novelty act, not musical greatness.

Kim Mitchell was on to something when he was playing with Max Webster, but descended into cliche playing through his entire solo career, which lasted far longer. Spotty brilliance only at the beginning of a career should not get you on this list.

Colin James = Jeff Healy, only a better singer.

Robbie Robertson. Find one innovative and captivating guitar passage he recorded in his whole career! Again, a solid songwriter and performer, not a fantastic guitarist.

Of the existing list, only Bruce Cockburn belongs on it.

Missing are some pretty obvious choices:

  1. Alex Lifeson
  2. Rick Emmett (although his musical taste is questionable)
  3. Daniel Lanois
  4. Randy Bachman

to name just a few!

I have to go with Neil Young. Not great in the pure sense but when he plugs in "Old Black" sparks fly.

In defence

Robbie Robertson. Signature 60's Toronto sound with a howling Telecaster. Clapton wanted to join The band in the big Pink era to play with Robbie

Jeff Healey Best version of My guitar gentley weeps. His hand over cord formation is a wonder to see and hear

Dom. Let's see Mandala, James Gang and The Guess Who hardly one trick.

Colin James man open your ears vand just listen

And Mitchell. Agree best in Max but he can really schred

Lifeson agreed is hot

Emmet would be better if his big head did not get in way of his fingers

Neil Young great song writer and singer but muddy as hell. Love him but he's not in these boys space as a slinger.

Robbie
Joni
Neil
Healey
Prince (he has a house in Toronto)

Joni is very highly regarded among musicians as a great guitar player. The facts that her song writing is so amazing and she usually just plays acoustic obscure her talent as a guitar player.

Neil Young usually makes every major poll of top guitar players. Technically, he's far from the best but he's got a great grunge sound. Like a Hurricane, Southern Man, Down By the River, Cowgirl in the Sand.

You all forgot about Liona Boyd.

Technically, she could outplay any of names mentioned so far. I've seen them all in concert and easily she is the best skilled. And she didn't need any Marshalls or Hiwatts to sound great unlike everyone else. (Plus, she was smoking hot in her day.)

You should also make the distinction between great songwriters who are guitarists & great guitar players. Robetson, Cockburn, Bachman, Neil Young & Joni are certainly great songwriters who happened to play guitar.

Emmett, Lifeson & Boyd are simply great guitar players (not to deride their own song-writing skills, at which Emmett & Lifeson are also well-skilled). Don't confuse the two categories.

On sheer guitar-playing skills & technical abilities, I would put it at
1. Boyd (let's see anyone else play Lecuono's Malaguena at even half her tempo)
2. Emmett (only because Lifeson can't shred as fast nor play classical like Rik)
3. Lifeson (because he was and is still clearly innovative at this craft, always pushing the guitar-envelope in different ways)

Kim with Max was the fantastic. Innovative at the time but probably made more money when he went solo & more predictable. Unless you heard Kim in the 70s (or saw him live), you shouldn't criticize him. Triano was a gem in the 70s who could rarely be outplayed. If you look at his discography, his studio work alone makes him a legend.

Jeff Healey is certainly skilled, particularly given his disability. His problem was that he played with arguably the worst-skilled rhythym section ever assembled. His bassist & drummer were awful and dragged his sound down.

Someone said Daniel Lanois? Excellent producer but as a guitar player? Name one song that he plays on. Can't think of one? Exactly!

What about Ed Bickert, the Canadian jazz legend? Though he's not mainstream & popular genre, true guitarists have respected him for years.

Finally, those Nickelback boys suck.
Good post. Don't agree with everything, but well stated.

John Albani (Lee Aaron's ex-guitarist). Yeah-yeah (don't laugh too hard)..... poofy 80's metal guitarist and a laughable lyricist, but back in the day he was technical enough (I've seen him perform live a few times) to piss rings around most of the other famous guitarists of the time. The only other Canadian guitarist that could out-shred him was/is Rik Emmet. Too bad he didn't have Emmett's, or Lifeson's taste though.

Cheers
