Looks like Niklas Lidstrom has finally hung them up. He was a great defenseman and will no doubt be a part of the Hall of Fame. The Red Wings will have a big hole to fill in their defense corps as he was a stalwart on the back end.
When talking of Lidstrom I think it's safe to say he ranks up their with the past greats like Orr, Robinson, Potvin, Coffey, Harvey , Bourque et al.

I loved watching him and will miss seeing him play next year.

7 Norris Trophy's is unreal - Big whole for the wings. I think you will see Sutter or Webber from Nashville end up their to help fill the void. I'd trade them Phaneuf for the rights to hang Lidstrom's Jersey from the ACC :)

I would go as far to say that Nik Lidstrom is the best European born player to ever play in the NHL. An automatic for the HOF I put him up there with the cream of the crop as far as D men go.

To play such a difficult position which seemed effortless at times is a credit to his skill and hockey sense. To do that over 2 decades as the young guns come and go at him and still plug away at the age of 41? A true professional on and off the ice as well.

Sad day for Hockey to lose such a great player... although a good day for all of Detroits opponents.

Up until Lid, I'd have said Salming was the best all-time Swedish D-man, although Borje had a lot more to feal with, with the "chicken Swede" stuff and the Flyers etc.

The league was definitely much harder for the initial round of Euros.

I'll still give the Lid the nod.

Orr had high praise for Lidstrom upon hearing his announcement;

"First of all, we’re going to miss him, putting aside the injuries last year, the guy still played awfully good hockey. After 20 years to continue to perform like he did in his 20th season, in my mind, that’s incredible. He was still a superstar, a key player for the team. Off the ice, the way he’s handled himself, he’s just class, he’s a classy gentleman. He’s represented our game as well as any player. To perform the way he did for 20 years, that’s special.

That’s a special player.’’
