The prime minister’s invitation-only event is expected to include representatives from about 100 foreign firms
Blackstone Inc. President Jon Gray,
BlackRock Inc.’s Larry Fink and
Barclays PLC chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan are among the executives set to attend an
investment summit being organized by Prime Minister
Mark Carney and two of Canada’s largest pension funds, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Representatives from major state-owned funds, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and Temasek Holdings chief executive Dilhan Pillay, have also accepted invitations.
As cinephiles head to world premieres starring Helen Mirren and Chris Rock,
the leaders of more than 100 investment firms, companies and government agencies will be gathered nearby at a luxury hotel in Canada’s largest city. On the agenda: energy security, defence spending, artificial intelligence, infrastructure — and deals.
The event on Sept. 14 and 15 is an important step in Carney’s plan to rebrand Canada as a destination for global capital and a place where business gets done. A decade of stagnation in
private-sector investment has made the
Canadian economy more vulnerable to supply shocks and policy shifts, especially the tariffs imposed by the United States, the country’s largest trading partner.
The summit’s attendees will represent the largest collection of assets under management ever assembled in one place in Canada, according to one official, speaking on condition they not be named because the list and the agenda are still private. The government’s intention is to make it a recurring event.
But this is Carney’s summit. The prime minister has had a direct hand in the planning, including who’s invited, with input from CPPIB chief executive John Graham and Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Mark Wiseman — himself a former executive at Canadian pension funds and at BlackRock.
