Free daycare will win more votes then cutting the CBC and subways to Sudbury.
I see that the stupid have awoken. There’s nothing free about this daycare scheme nor does it help mothers get back to work any sooner as it doesn’t kick in until the child is 2 1/2 yrs old.
Here’s my take on it, and I’m certain some actuarial did the same math to minimize the number of families that can take advantage of this program. maternity leave is 12 months, so a family has to figure out what to do for a year and a half. Child care for infants between 12 months and 2 1/2 yrs is also the most limited and most expensive (that’s if you can find a spot). Statistics also show that the age gap between kids is 18-24 months. So right around the time that Timmy or Tammy are ready for daycare, mom has had or is about to have another baby and is now home on a second maternity leave, so Timmy or Tammy are at home with mom for another year. By the time mom is ready to go back to work, the first child is ready for JK and she still needs to pay for infant care or extend her mat leave.
So as good as this sounds, it was planned to benefit the least amount of families possible. And if was able to figure out the reason why it starts at 2 1/2 years, I’m sure that someone in the actuarial dept ran these permutations prior to rolling this out. This is another disingenuous political ploy to buy the votes of the uninformed. If Wynne really cared as she claims, why didn’t this start at 12 months instead of 30 months of age?
