Leafs acquire Steckel from NJ...

Steckel led the league in faceoff % won last year...not sure if Zigomanis is "better"? Also Zigomanis is 6 ft, and Steckel is 6'6. Leafs needed some more size up front.

It's only been two games, but I'm pretty happy with this pickup. He wins draws which is something the Leafs definitely needed help in - especially during a penalty kill where you easily shave off 20-30 secs with a winning draw. He's a big body that plays hard. Might not have great offensive skillsets but there's no substitute for effort. During the Ottawa game where he was on the penalty kill. Steckel blocked two shots playing with no stick, totally putting his own body on the line for his team. Thumbs up for me.

Aside from ONE season with Phoenix, Zig has never played more than a handful of games per year with an NHL franchise. Steckle has played most of the games for his respective club for the last four seasons and has been at or near the top of NHL faceoff men during that period. Zigomanis only took some draws and was not even put out for the most important ones...Bozak usually was.

I think Steckel is a good pick up for the Leafs. He understands that he is a 3rd or 4th line centre, but is a smart enough player to play up to the 2nd line, when he needs to fill in.
