Because they can

So these comments weren't meant to discount what I said before? It's clearly sarcasm and a poor attempt at it to boot.
Take it any way you want.

But the comments were directed at how the unions are going to try to disrupt ALL deliveries, unionised or not.

FAST

I do get kinda ornery when unions are the topic, and tend to post that way !!

Give the franchise to the Koreans. They work 100 hours a week (no overtime) and don't have a union. Plus, they are open longer hours and have many more locations.

They would be idiotic to strike. There is a growing sentiment to privatise the industry. If they strike there will be a strong movement to privatise. They can't be that stupid can they?

They've only taken a strike vote which is standard procedure in negotiations. It's a bargaining position - lots of time for a settlement...

I heard they are setting up for a strike just in time for May 24th weekend
Now why should anyone in Ontario support them when they go out of their way to inconvenience the public & screw up a special holiday?

Privatising the LCBO just to eliminate one more union is reason enough for me

Because there are LOTS of union members out there who support each other:

I hope they do go on strike so we can that pressure will be brought to bear on getting rid of LCBO's monopoly. A position that has long outlived its Victorian history to protect us for ourselves.
Their union is actually one of the saner ones that realize in today's tough economic times the reality is you should be happy you have a job, let alone one that offers the benefits that theirs does. If the rank and file vote for a strike, they only have themselves to blame when they privatize and have real competition. With the reality of a Conservative govt. in ON a very strong likelihood, should be fun to watch the crocodile tears.

I have a love/hate relationship with the LCBO, and no I don't work there.

The good things:

- Excellent selection of wines and spirits
- New Vintages release every 2 weeks
- Return any bottle for replacement or refund should it be off taste, you didn't like it or even if you drop and break it. Not a hope in hell of that happening if it was privatized
- State of the art tasting counter (at select stores) where you can taste a wide variety of products at a very reasonable price before you purchase
- Knowledgeable Vintages product consultants. Most are sommeliers
- Product safety. Bottles from every batch of wine and spirits received are tested in their lab for toxins and impurities before they are put on the shelves

Now the bad:

- Can't buy beer and wine in the corner store
- Most wines and spirits are overpriced

So on one hand I like what they offer but on the other hand I wish they'd relax the rules and allow wines and spirits sold in corner stores. I don't see why they couldn't still control it but open up distribution. I mean they already have small wine shops in some grocery stores, although with mostly crappy wines.

Similar to the Post Office where they have customer service counters in Shoppers and some small mom and pops.
Exactly! And the notion that wine and beer sold in corner stores will somehow lead to an increase in drinking and driving is ludicrous. If anything many people would be able to walk to a local store rather than travel some distance by car to make a purchase.

I think the only people who are opposed to beer and wine in corner stores are LCBO employees because in may mean a few less jobs for them.

Because there are LOTS of union members out there who support each other:
Exactly
They support each other without any consideration whether they are right or wrong.
They support another unions strike without any regard for the customers / suppliers it might hurt
That is what makes it so wrong

I do not care when was the last time they went on strike
That is a ridiculous question

When was the last time your doctor refused to see you ?
Can you imagine your dentist working to rule & not applying freezing before drilling
Perhaps the police should shut down patrols the weekend of Carribana
Imagine if the all the gas station operators closed their stations Friday morning before a long weekend

The LCBO exists to provide a service to the people on Ontario, not to enrich union members
If they can not provide that service when it is needed the most, privatise it

Asking when the last time they inconvenienced the public was is not a valid justification for doing so in the future
You need to stop living in the 70s , that type of thinking is outdated

I believe The Beer Store is owned by a couple of the big breweries. Labatt, Molson, & Sleemans.
The workers are not represented by the same union as the LCBO workers.
Unlike the LCBO the Beer Store profit does not go into the Ontario governments general revenues.
The ownership may explain how product is placed in the stores.
The three companies are foreign owned.
