he has his cup(s), he has nothing else left to prove
It seems to me that he accomplished all this in a quiet unassuming manner. A sure bet for Hall of Fame.

A sure bet for sure. One of my all-time favourites.

on a canucks broadcast last week, i heard sakic has been skating again and hopes to play in the avalanches' final two games of the season. one of the commentators questioned why he would bother and the other said he has hopes of playing in the olympics in 2010. if that's the case, i assume he will be back for 1 more season.

He almost didn't have an NHL career.

But while Sakic enjoyed success on the ice, he and his team faced a tragedy on the night of December 30, 1986. The Broncos were driving to a game against the Regina Pats, and due to bad weather conditions, the bus crashed after the driver lost control on a patch of black ice outside of Swift Current. While Sakic was unharmed, four of his teammates (Trent Kresse, Scott Kruger, Chris Mantyka and Brent Ruff) were killed. This incident had a lasting impact on the young Sakic, who has declined to talk about the crash during his career. The next year, in 1987–88, Sakic was named the WHL Most Valuable Player and Canadian Major Junior Player of the Year. He scored 160 points (78 goals, 82 assists), tying him with Theoren Fleury for the WHL scoring title.
He's one of my favs.....hope he plays again next year and in the Olympics.
(maybe he should hire someone to shovel his driveway)

He should have no problems being voted into the HHF.

Can he pull a Mats Sundin? Sit out 3 months and then return to active duty? Not sure his body can still took the pounding of a full NHL season PLUS the Olympics. When exactly is the Winter Olympics in 2010?

So much of our lives are beyond our control. A 22 year old major league pitcher is killed in a hit and run. Natasha Richardson falls and is fatally injured.

olympics are february, 2010.

if sakic had played this past season i'm sure he still would have been close to a point a game player. he had 100 points in his last full season and over a point a game last season.

sakic will never pull a mats sundin. sakic has hockey in his heart. sundin has hockey in his wallet.

I think Sakic knows he should hang them up. His last two seasons have been injury plagued. Even though he is in great shape, the rigors of the NHL on a 40 year old body is too much for most to handle. What a great career though. He is the true Captain Clutch, always elevating his game when it matters the most. Here are his accomplishments:
WHL Rookie of the Year - 1987
Canadian Major Jr. POY - 1988
Conn Smythe Trophy - 1996 (should have won this again in 2001 but they gave it to Roy instead)
Lady Byng Trophy - 2001
Lester B. Pearson Award - 2001
Hart Trophy - 2001
Olympic Gold Medal (Salt Lake City) - 2002
MVP of Winter Olympic Hockey Tournament - 2002
2 Stanley Cup Rings
1641 career points (8th all time)
A shoe in for the HHOF

When I think of class athletes he's right up the top of my list along with Steve Yzerman. Remember when they won the Cup in 2001? Instead of taking the Cup and skating with it first (like all Captains do), he passed it off to Ray Bourque. I'd like to see both Sakic and Stevie Y involved in Hockey Canada for a long time, they just know what it takes to win.
