I hav'nt gone to Jiffy lube for several years, they tried to sell me the transmission service, said that my trans oil was burned, funny thing was I had jus had the trans rebuilt, when I said to leave it that I would go back for warranty work ,they still insisted that there must be something wrong., it was a scam.
Another They tried to sell me a new oil drain plug for $5 or something, there was nothing wrong with my original, besides the original has a magnet inside to collect any metal particals, the one they wanted to put in didnt, also my mechanic tells me he has seen these ones they put in, very low grade steel and P.O.C.
The clincher for me , had my work van in for oil change, I saw the kid ripping the air filter out of the housing,( It is tight quarters to get at, but it can removed without ripping obvoiously) brought it over to me to sow me how it was ripped and I needed a new one, when I told him that he better get the manager over here ASAP, becuase that was a new filter, & I saw him rip it, and I wasnt leaving until I had a new one, & I wasn't going to pay for it, he looked upset (poor kid in a way) , Manager came over & offered appology after apology, even offered me free oil change next time, I declined, never went back!
I don't trust them!

I do my own oil changes for a reason... so that I know exactly what I'm getting. It's also really easy to do.

Oh yeah... and Active Green & Ross is as bad as Jiffy Lube. I personally have caught them lying to be about a repair. They also do shit like offer "free" oil changes, but then charge you $10 for the filter.

It's a bit like the Canadian Tire experience, where the mechanics work on a commission basis (at least, I presume they still do) and your routine service tune-up ends up costing megabucks... They just love female customers!

I have never gone back to CT for any service work in the past 12 years.

They count on the fact most people know very little abouts cars today, to scare you into unneeded repairs and work. Over the years I've run into scams from many auto shops in WNY. Luckily I do most of my own minor and average repairs (another hobby of mine) so I usually catch them.
Brake shops, radiator shops and tranny shops are rife with scam artists.
In the 70s my transmission was slipping and shifting badly at 55,000 miles. Tranny oil was even brown and burnt smelling. A 'big name' tranny shop said it needed a $600 'rebuilt' transmission, when all that was needed was a complete tranny oil change that I did myself, costing about $12! It was like getting a new tranny! Car was good to 95,000 miles when it was traded in for a new car.
Back in the 90s a K-Mark and a Monroe Muffler Shop, tried to tell me I needed a $400 and $650 brake job to pass inspection. They both had all 4 wheels apart to 'show what was wrong'! I did all my own brake jobs back then and got the manager over to see what he thought. He agreed with his mechanic. I told him he was full of SH*T and to put the car back together. They did and I got the parts needed, fixed it and another K-Mart passed it with no problems a couple days later. The cost to me was $30 for two pair of lifetime Kevlar pads that you could buy back then. The rotors didn't have to be replaced of even turned as they claimed because they still made good rotors back then.... unlike the crap 'throw-away' rotors from China everyone sells today! Both of those scam shops said I needed brakes front & rear, new rotors up front and Monroe said the master cylinder was shot plus 2 tires had to be replaced to pass inspection!
The sad truth is that today cars are made better than ever but there are so many ways you can be scamed/scared into getting work done you don't even need! Try to find an honest mechanic then stick with him, to help avoid being ripped off.

lol @ CT

I brought my 2002 Civic into CT for an oil change. They suggested that I should also change my power steering fluid.

The model of Civic I was driving had electric power steering which has no fluid.

EFFIN crooks

Dealerships are better but not by much.

I do all my own work also. Well as best as I can.
Oil change, tranny fluid and did the whole front end of my car last summer and saved mega buck's.
All I needed was a front end alignmentand I was good to go.

How is Rapid Lube, people??????
Thats where I get my oil changes done
I knew this would happen.......if you see that video you will see all the outlets tested were in C A L I F O R N I A

I'd say up here, the large chain type locations have a lot to lose if they're caught ripping off people plus (and I don't know if this is true in the US) but up here, you can demand to see the replaced parts. For eg: if you buy the transmission filter replacement deal, you can ask to see the replaced filter. Same goes for oil filters, fuel filters, belts bulbs etc.

And isn't rapid lube that one where you drive up and stay in the vehicle while they work on it? I mean, it would be awefully hard for them to NOT replace the oil and filter when you can obviously feel them doing it.....

For the record: many of these places, including Canadian Tire, are franchises. These franchises make the owner millions of dollars and if they lose that licence, they are screwed. SO, moral is if you've had trouble, report them to the head office and something will be done.

Agreed! But you can make the same demand in the USA. The skam shop likely has a whole cupboard full of damaged parts to show you!

I remember one of the Toronto TV stations ran an undercover survey to identify dishonest repair shops in the area. they disconnected a wire then had the owner visit several shops, where they got various estimates...only a few correctly identified the simple problem!

Fact is, there are scammers everywhere, not just in California. Many shops are out to make a fast buck. This clip merely draws attention to the fact that we need to be careful and alert to the scams that are possible.

Best solution is to find an honest mechanic (there are still lots around!) and stick with him for ALL work. You can leave him a blank check without any worry about being hosed!

Well, if you have been using the same outlet many times with no problems and you have got to know the staff etc. then you are likely ok.

The scam artists eventually reveal themselves through customer complaints, repeated extra part replacements, high staff turnovers, low estimates/high bills and owner operators whom you can talk to for 10 minutes and your instincts tell you they are not to be trusted.

You're right Kblue, but I would think that if I was asking to see the replaced parts, I'd also want him to show me the new parts he installed.

As for the test with the "missing wire" the problem with that test is that vehicles are so complex now, any one symptom could be caused by any number of problems. I seem to remember that "test" and even with my knowledge of auto mechanics I thought it was an unfair test.

A much fairer test would be to put a hole in a rad hose and take your vehicle to a shop complaining of overheating. A legit shop would do a pressure test first and would immediately spot the leaky hose. If a shop tried to hose you (pun intended lol) then that was a fair test.

A good example would be taking your car into a shop and saying "it's idling rough".....that could be caused by fuel delivery, air delivery, electrical (spark plugs etc) too many things that could cause the problem.

I know of one instance where a new vehicle was brought in with a "rattling" in the bodywork. The mechanic did 14 road tests and went over just about every bolt and screw on that side of the car. After about 4 days in the shop they finally removed the door liner and found an extra bolt in the bottom of the door. Luckily the vehicle was under warranty but would the shop have been scamming the person if they charged them for all the work they actually did to find the fault? Not in my opinion.....

Have you ever had a car totalled while it was in for service?

I have had my oil/lube/filter done at both places... and all I will say is Jiffy Lube never forgot to put oil back in the engine.

Actually, I do most of my own auto repairs, however, sometimes, it's not worth changing the oil yourself for all the hassle involved.

As much as I HATE GM, I have to admit that Popham Pontiac Buick on the Queensway had and excellent fast lube centre. Fairly fast, always reasonably priced, GM oil filter and they NEVER EVER tried to upsell me. I think they charged around 30 bucks. To buy 5 litres of oil and a new filter is at least 20 bucks, plus, who wants to climb under a slushy car in February, plus dispose of the used oil properly. I'll pay the 30 bucks thanks.

Now my current dealer - 401 Dixie Nissan Infiniti, that's a different story. As soon as my warrantee is up they will NEVER EVER see me again.

BUYER BEWARE!

An eye opening report!

Although I can't believe this kind of practice is restricted just to Jiffy Lube; I would not trust any of these 'fast' outlets...

To those of you who go to JiffyLube for service, take a look at this
investigative report...

Used just about all the quickie changes and they're all full of kids that don't know their asses from their elbows.

One even tried to use an air gun to put the oil plug back in. I can't post what I said to him.

Found a Toyota trained independent mechanic and have used him for the last 18 years. Cheaper, no, but workmanship is from the old school.
