Is that why Soccer moms bring their mini vans to Canadian Tire?

BTW, what would be the equivalent of a Canadian Tire in the States???

American Tire?

If you use quick lube places, Mr.Lube is the best because you have some level of supervision and they don't do a whole lot of other things anyway so if they can't really profit too much from making bogus recommendations on their inspection report. Also they use Kralinator filters made by Wix which are by near concensus the supreior mass market filters.

Personally I've only ever taken my cars to places where I can observe all work done in the shop. Any garage that want's to hide behind their "no customers allowed due to insurance regulations" crap can forget about my business.

I distribute my business between three independent shops and I make sure they know it. I think they are much less likely to do crappy work since they know the car is routinely inspected by other mechanics. I also think they are less likely to recommend bogus repairs knowing I always get a second opinion and they have only a 1:3 chance of getting the job anyway - but a 100% chance of losing future business if I find out they lied to me - that way I'm reasonably sure they'd only advise work to be done when they feel a need to cover their liability by warning me of something.

I think it also helps that I do frequent routine and preventive maintenance with all of them so they know they will get some money from me without inventing things to do.

CTC opened up a chain of stores in the US called Auto Zone....they are actually doing ok compared to their first venture which failed miserably.

Also during the early 80's they opened some stores in Bahamas.....

One of the major reasons I don't go to Juffy Lube or any of those quicky oil change places is b/c I know they're hiring kids out of school who a) probably don't know WTF they're doing half the time, and b) probably don't give a shit anyways.

I take my car to Canadian Tire for oil changes (and oil changes only!) not because I trust 'em (I don't), but b/c it's not worth it for my personal mechanic to just do an oil change. I always make sure that the work CT has claimed to have done was actually done.

Oh yeah... and Active Green & Ross is as bad as Jiffy Lube. I personally have caught them lying to be about a repair. They also do shit like offer "free" oil changes, but then charge you $10 for the filter.

I don't know about AG&R lying, but I do know they quoted me 50% more for a brake job that the dealer wanted.

I still do mine for the same reasons.
We used to have an oufit in WNY called 'Grease Monkeys' that was like Jiffy Lube.
You could watch them while they did their job but you still couldn't see everything. Quit using them because they alaways tried upselling you things you didn't need, new air or gas filters, wipers, new oil drain plugs, even new washers for the drain plug!... etc. When I started doing my own oil changes again I discovered they weren't greasing the upper ball joints because they had to strain a little bit to get to them!......They were bone dry!
Just did an oil change, (do them every 5,000 miles, been doing it that way for over 25 years WITH NO PROBLEMS!) it was done right and it cost me just under $6! I buy oil and filters when they go on sale. I don't worry about doing oil changes in the winter because I have a couple vehicles and can rotate use of them to put the miles on them in such a way as to avoid having to do any oil change in the winter.

I had an issue with a heater core repair. Basically they tried to charge me for 'recoring' the existing heater core AND charge me for a new one.

They also tried charging me 8 hours of labour for a job that should only take 4.5 hours according to the Chilton guide that mechanics go by.
