I had some Jewish food today. I eat pastrami sandwiches ( Montreal smoked meat ) Some of the stuff I had today was quite bland. I think they were called latkas and verenekes they were sort of boiled dough. In Jewish food, is there anything else that rivals smoked meat sandwiches?

Smoked or pickled beef/calf tongue.
You should also try some kishka! It's delicious.
Go to Daiter's or Nortown Foods to buy jewish foods and to The Pickle Barrel to eat out. Also try Caplanski's or Moe Pancer's or Yitz's on Eglinton or the original Switzer's on Spadina. They're all good delis to eat at and authentic. Unfortunately, Marki's closed up this year.

You should try a knish...eat it along with your sandwich, they are pretty good. In the most traditional versions, the filling is made entirely of mashed potato, ground meat, sauerkraut, onions, kasha (buckwheat groats) or cheese. Check out Centre street deli: http://www.centrestreetdeli.com/ for a good knish!! ;)

Center Street deli is very good for those out of Toronto and in or around Thornhill.
BTW, a knish is usually made of mashed potato dough and then stuffed with a filling of meat etc and then cooked.

Potato latkes are made from grated potatos with a couple of other ingrediants and then fried. Yummy! Traditionally eaten hot with applesauce or sour cream and sugar.

Anyone remember Moshe's Felafel House on Spadina near College back in the 70's? Close to the El Mocambo. They had the greatest felafels. I know that isn't strictly Jewish, more Middle Eastern, but Moshe's was Jewish. Sorry. Brain Fart.

Yitz has good knish. They also make kick ass borscht and usually have a lunch special with sandwich. Corned beef is the shiznit.

My very first introduction to felafels and to lentil soup - didn't live in TO then, I came down for a concert at Massey Hall & one of my friends had heard of it. Loved the food and the funky/sleazy vibe of Spadina back then.

Best Jewish-style food is in Montreal. Wolensky's, Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen (Schwartz's), Bens, Snowdon Deli, etc.
