Being a Jays fan I hate the Yankees, however, there are a few that I respect, Munson, Winfield, Mattingly, Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio and Mantle but there is one that IMHO is the best Mr Jeter. In a era where you could face up yo 7 or 8 pitchers a game I think that it is harder to play in this generation than the 20s or 30s where the pitcher would pitch the whole game and in the 7th inning he would have a noodle arm and you could pad your stats. Mr Jeter seemed to have a knack for the clutch performance, home run to get to 3000 hits, run scoring double to become the all time Yankee hit leader and for his last hit, a run scoring single. The most shocking stat to me is , with all the Yankee greats from the past, no one had ever hit 3000 hits not DiMaggio or Mantle...wow that says a lot! Now I know that there isn't enough space or time to acknowledge ever one of his clutch performances but nobody will forget his last game. Can anyone remember the final games of Roger Clemens? Of Barry Bonds?, Alex Rodriguez? Rodriguez, of course, hasn’t officially retired yet, one can only hope that he dose and soon.
So when the Yankees history is written, Jeter’s name will be in lights alongside those of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle. It’s pretty impressive company, but Jeter is an impressive player, and well deserving of every honour coming his way.

I never got to see Munson, Winfield, Mattingly, Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio or Mantle play but that's all right because I got to see another Yankee great play....several times, the greatest Yankee of them all IMHO and his name is Derek Jeter

If he hadn't have gotten ill, Gehrig would definitely amassed well over 3000 hits. Look at his stats per season and extrapolate another 6-7 seasons. He also had tremendous power numbers.

Pretty hard to put him in front of Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio or Mantle

Ruth revolutionized the game of baseball and spectator sports in general. There were seasons where he out-homered most - if not all - the other TEAMS in the league. No one else comes close as an icon or a player.

While this era has specialist pitching, it also has smaller ballparks. Someone once wrote - I think the author of the above book - that the players of today should try riding the red eye train from Boston to St Louis and sleeping in a stuffy hotel room with a couple of room mates and no a/c in Missouri in July and then going to the ballpark to hit. And doing all this without scouting or videotape or conditioning coaches, etc.

Like I stated before same pitcher for the whole game and sometimes double headers. I would think that would be easier to hit against in stead of 7 or 8 pitchers a game

Has Jeter ever won a batting title, MVP award, HR title, RBI title, etc.? Yes, I know he played on 5 or 6 WS teams.
10-15 years ago the debate was "who is the best shortstop, Arod, Nomar or Jeter?"

Hindsight:

Nomar is out of the discussion.

PED's and personality aside, still a good debate re: the other two.

Jeter is peerless in terms of dedication, very high level consistency, longevity and team first mentality.

Arod was a huuuge impact player offensively, waaay more than Jeter. Not as consistent or long lasting as #2 but with his career numbers he was undeniably great for quite a long time. Defensively, maybe less than Jeter but nobody complained.

All time, I'd put Arod ahead but not by a whole lot.

However, nobody else in that era playing in the same conditions did anything like Ruth. He hit more homers than other teams who also hit against a pitcher for a whole game. He not only hit more than other players, he hit more than other teams against a pitcher who pitched for a whole game.

Jeter never had numbers that dominated his peers.

Just a question, since a full time player like Jeter averages say 4-5 plate appearances per game how often would he face 7-8 pitchers?

I think he is probably a first ballot HOFer given his accumulated career stats. But best Yankee I think is a stretch. He did not dominate the league like some of the other Yankees in their eras. For his career vs his peer group, he was not top 10 in HR, RBI, SB, OBP, SLUG%, OPS.

This.

Not well known but for a few years early on in his career some considered Ruth to be the best left handed pitcher in baseball. Mind blowing numbers and records in this link:

Has any Yankee won the all star game MVP then go on to win the MVP of the World Series in the same year?
Has any Yankee got 3000 hit?
Has any Yankee won 4 world series in there first 5 years in the league?

Sometimes you can be the best player on a team and not have outstanding stats...but Jeter certainly has.

Jeter wasn't even the best shortstop on the Yankees over the past 3 years.
