Halladay has basically declared publicily NO to redoing his contract and that is a sign a player wants to test free agency. I think Halladay is done in Toronto after this year. I believe he'll sign with a NL team like the Braves, Astros, or Dodgers for huge $$$ next year. Riccardi is right. Trade him now while you can still get something of value for him.

He would look good in Dodger blue. He earned the right to a big payday with a contending team. Also, he will have to pitch to only 8 hitters in the NL.

it's imperative that they trade him for the future of the franchise. But doesn't he have one year after this year left on his cntract?

You'd be wrong, Halladay is signed through the 2010 season.

Philadelphia would be a very good fit. They are starving for starting pitching and have a lot of good young talent available.

Someone mentioned the Red Sox and Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholz. The first two aren't going anywhere. Buchholz is the name thrown around the most when it comes to trade talks with Boston. Theo obviously covets the guy because he doesn't seem to want to let him go. Personally, I would. While he is tearing it up in 'AAA', I still have doubts about him as a major leaguer. His problem last year was that he seemed to freak out with runners on base. Until I see him perform back up with the Red Sox and prove that the problem is behind him, I am going to have doubts.

As for Philly - here are their best bargaining chips.

OF Dominic Brown: Rated by Baseball America as the organization's top prospect, he is currently on the disabled list with a broken finger, but that shouldn't limit his value. The 21-year-old left-handed hitting corner outfielder was hitting .299 with a .379 On Base Percentage with nine home runs, 38 RBI and 14 stolen bases at Class A Clearwater.

RHP Kyle Drabek: He has been tearing up Double-A Reading, and at just 21 years old may be on the verge of surpassing Carlos Carrasco as the organization's top pitching prospect.

LHP J.A. Happ: Happ recently recorded his first career complete game shutout against the Blue Jays and has been fantastic the last two seasons. Scouts don't think he has the upside of a Buchholz, but with five more years of club control and an impressive start to his career, he has value.

INF Jason Donald: He has battled injury and performance issues since his promotion to Triple-A, but he is still viewed as one of the Phillies' better prospects.

C Lou Marson: Like Donald, has had a so-so year at Triple-A. But, also like Donald, he is the closest thing the organization has to a major-league-ready bat, and he plays a premium position.

OF Michael Taylor: Currently with Double-A Reading. At 6'-6" and 250 lbs, he has been compared to Ryan Howard.

RHP Carlos Carrasco: Kind of in the Gavin Floyd mold. Great stuff, but he still does not have the major league makeup. Then again, he is only 22 years old.

OF John Mayberry: Has drifted back and forth between the Phils and Lehigh Valley. Big-time power, but won't be an everyday player in Philly for at least another year-and-a-half.

Not in the A.L East

Firstly, let me say that seeing him go would just break my heart but he deserves to be on a winning team. He's a great pitcher and should have something to show for it. He should NEVER go a team from the same division.

That being said, if he does go, I hope the Jays can get a trade similar to what Cleveland got when they traded Bartolo Colon and got Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee (Cy Young winner) and Brandon Phillips. A pitcher full of great potential and two solid players that will fit nicely into any club.

Pitching, being what it is in the expansion era, is always at a premium. By putting Doc out there we'll see if any teams with any hope of playoff contention are desperate enough to deal away talent. Remember that the Jays gave up Jeff Kent for David Cone. Tough to regret that one since we did win the World Series.

I, for one, would hate to see him go and I think the entire Toronto Sports scene would be less than well served for having to say goodbye to an athlete of such high caliber.

We'll see where this takes the Jays.

i think ricciardi should be fired on the spot for making these comments.

roy has been loyal to this organization since day one, and i never heard doc utter the words that he would not resign, that he wanted to seek a trade. the man deserves to say it himself, and making a mockery of the man and all his accomplishments, which is what JP is seemingly trying to do, is just pure BS.

fuck you JP, take your moneyball theories and your empty promises and go elsewhere. this man should never ever run another team in any organized league after his time with the jays is up.

IMHO trade Doc asap. The Jays are going to finish in 4th place in the AL east division anyway with or without Doc.

Any chance of the Jays applying to get into the AL central:) ? It's too bad that the Jays got stuck being apart of the toughest division in major league baseball.

I do like baseball but I love when Roy Halladay pitches. If there is any game I would like to see it is when Halladay takes to the mound every 5 games. A class act all the way and I tihnk it would be insane to give him up.

To trade Halladay means the Jays really don't care about winning at all and that will be the last I will watch Jays baseball for a long time. :(

I will miss Doc if he goes but if he does go let's hope we can get a CF and/or a RF who can HIT (anybody is better than what we got now:mad: ).

Here's the thing I haven't heard mentioned. If you trade him now the team that gets him will have the remainder of this season AND NEXT at far below market value. This broadens the market, as teams that couldn't afford to sign him if and when he becomes a FA might be willing to pay this contract. The perennial contenders would have to be interested, but also teams who think they're close. It also increases his value, as teams might pay more, in terms of prospects, if they get a year and a half, as opposed to 2 months. The thing for JP is if he's going to do this, he has to get ML ready prospects. I can't see Jays fans, both of them, being ok with a bunch of A and AA prospects, no matter how good they may become.

I thought I was the only Jay fan but your post seems to imply there is another one in the wild.:p I can't see the Jays being contenders (or even wild card) with both a CF and a RF who can't HIT. Also, there is a lack of power at 1st base and 3rd base which are traditionally power positions. (Yes, yes I know Rolen is hitting .330.) So, the Jays are lacking power at 1st base, 3rd base, CF and RF. Also, do we have a regular LF or is that position a revolving door? And we could use a "shut the door" closer.

JP does not play moneyball. If he did, there is no way the Jays would be spending 10 mill+ on a closer. They rarely hold up for more than 3-5 years (see Eric Gagne).

But, like I said in another thread; we'll trade Halladay and JP to Boston for Lugo and Theo (this man plays moneyball very well). We'll throw in Wells and Rios if they pony-up Ellsbury (I really like this kid).

I think I can speak for all of RSN in saying we'll do Doc for Lugo, maybe even throw in that Japanese guy we paid all that money for. No Theo! No Ellsbury! If thhis kid develops some power, and I think he will, he's a future MVP.

Are you saying the 14 mil this year and the 15 mil next year is NOT a big pay day?

I believe JP made those comments intentionally to accelerate his exit from the Jays. He probably didn't have the blessing of upper management to blab these comments. He's a lame duck GM with no authority to make any deals right now. Beeston should fire him NOW.
