Explain to me why we couldn't re-sign Delgado ....
Exactly! JP says we can't afford him, then goes and signs Glaus for more money than they offered Delgato. Bottom line is the the only star JP wanted to keep from he Gord Ash era is Doc H.

I just heard the numbers are closer to 26 Mill over 2 years now. That just makes no sense to me when they are in need of pitching and middle infield help. If this happens ill be in shock. No doubt having Thomas, Wells and Glaus hitting back to back to back ( assuming) would be awsome but get "what you need pieces" first before adding "nice to have pieces"

Talk about a guy at the tail end of his career. That would be a huge waste unless you felt he was the last key to making the World Series..... which he is not.

The money would be better signing/resigning position player or a starter.

Because Delgado left when the Jays' budget was tighter.

I don't mind the addition of Thomas, but not at that price. They should have made a push for him last year when he was cheap. Cheaper than a 6-something million dollar Hillenbrand.

Too much of a risk at 38, especially considering his relatively recent ankle problems. But I said the same thing last year when Thomas got off to a slow start, and he shut me up come the end of the season.

Considering everything is speculation, and we didn't see what JP did last year in the off season. I can only conclude that he might be signing Thomas to set up another signing for pitching. Thomas is at the end of his career and it would mean alot for someone like that to come to Toronto to pretty much finish out his career and win a championship. This is incentive for other players to sign. JP is sneaky like that, and I wouldn't be surprised if this trade was just part one of the whoel picture. If it is indeed just getting a power bat then I agree that it is not worth it.

One thing you are forgetting. Jays budget will be maxed out. Be no money left for decent pitcher.

Hey if there is a good signing to be made out there and JP let's Rogers know...I am sure something canbe done. It's not like there is a cap or anything.

Maybe. Suspect it's got more to do with their prospect of and interest in re-signing Frank Catalanotto. Can't see them getting both so they've saved on Frank C to set against money for Frank T. That move will also give them batting line-up insurance against losing Wells if he's traded for a pitcher (as PHNINE mentioned) and/or them having an even more potent line-up if they don't get the kind of pitcher they are looking for. On that basis, probably makes sense. :)

Well Thomas's signing must mean Wells isn't resigning ... A's must be
laughing .. They got 39 hrs and 114 rbi for 2.5 million and Jays have to
pay 10 million for the exact samething ... Imagine Wells if he stays ..
I am getting paid 4.5 million and doing all this and your getting more to
be a DH ...

It could be worse .. Its not like JP is paying 51 million just for the
permission to talk to a free agent ..
Some writers see this as a plus for Wells. He could end up with a new contract this winter anyway around that same figure as Frank T. What nobody knows is Rogers position on this - it seems like it's basically go ahead and get what you need, provided it's going to strengthen the team and get them into the play-offs. Let's hope they can settle with Wells and get one or two strong pitchers. :D

Management and Rogers have probably put that to one side as building a team takes time. They did well this year and could have been closer to the play-offs if one or two things had worked better for them, particularly the performance of the number 5 pitcher. Having got (so?) close, you can imagine the enthusiasm to go that 'further mile'. Can't fault them for that. :)

I don't think we need more hitters unless Vernon Wells is leaving sometime soon(before the start of next year)..In fact I believe our pitching could use a guy like Barry Zito before our hitting could use a guy like Frank Thomas...

It is easier to find good hitters then quality pitchers. JP would rather out hit a team then out pitch them.

on a 38 year old DH ... Going by that theory which is correct Supply and Demand theory would mean it would be cheaper to sign hitting...
I have no idea why you would spend 10million now on Frank Thomas. A quality pitcher would cost a lot more.
