Big time move for sure, would have loved Valdez to give us a lefty. But Cease has a great history of staying healthy and big time K/Rate. He will fit right in, and with a terrific defense behind him, his numbers will look even better.

Whether people think it's a good signing or not, it shows ownership is serious.
Down side, it probably means Scherzer and Bassitt are not in next years plans. They will be missed.

I wouldn't close the book on Scherzer yet - they will want a little more starting pitching depth, especially if they keep Yesavage on some sort of limit next season. Another 1 year deal at maybe $10M is still really possible. That said, Jays just did their heaviest lifting outside maybe bringing back Bichette. Their payroll must be near $300M now.

That's a drop in the bucket after their World Series run.

I estimate games 6 and 7 ticket revenue alone was about $120M - average ticket cost was around $1.5K. Add in say, $25-50M in concessions for those two games, and it's literally paying for Cease on its own. It's such a great situation - Rogers owns the stadium and network broadcasting them, so all revenue stays internal, which again helps the bottom line.

I'd imagine season ticket sales are excellent to sold out, so they can properly forecast further revenue spikes too. Winning is everything, and can still be very profitable. I'd say they have enough for Bichette or Tucker if they choose to go that route.

The one thing that must be remembered is that already signed returning players are costing the Jays about $45M more in salaries. Pay increase to Vlad as he starts his new contract, Santander/Hoffman / Straw / Gimenez contracts pay more in 2026 than 2025, Bieber for a full year, arb increases to Varsho/Lauer/Clement, Kirk increase for extension.

So that eats up a lot of the cleared salaries for players that left (Bassitt/Scherzer/Green).

But this team is obviously going to spend more this year than last. Its just an element of how much?

I don't know. I'm not loving this move. Cease throws a lot of sliders and how many innings he has worked in his career makes me nervous. His elbow is going to explode eventually.

He had TJ surgery in 2014 before his pro career even began..

And since then, all of these unmissed starts, innings and sliders. I'm not loving it. Yeah he's a workhorse, but imagine the toll it takes on his elbow.

And from what I see so far, he seems to be a guy with great stuff that's good enough to always win… But not exactly a winning bulldog. Kind of like Kevin Gausman. Great competitor, but achieves the short end of the stick far too often. Hopefully I'm wrong.

How do salaries affect the expected salary cap? Even though bo and vlad are best friends, hard to believe he'd be satisfied with half of vladdy salary which he might be in the 10 yr x 25 mil area for 250 mil total.

Vlad will probably be quiet most of the regular season again while bo carries the load again. I think bo will want 300 to 350 mil to stay. They were willing to pay ohtani and Soto 700mil and you can't pay a fan favorite half that? Fans love bo

The Jays will likely exceed the salary cap and happily pay the tax.

They will likely sign Bo to a shorter deal.

Vladdy had a great season in 2025. Bo did did not carry the team. He did make a great contribution to the team's successful season.

That's a lot of cake for a second baseman...Cause short is a place he shouldn't be playing regularly.

If I'm Bo I would take whatever the Jays are offering...The team and organization have bright days ahead...Whatever you do in life don't leave your comfort zone.

As a Yankee fan he'd look really good at third for us...Lot of pressure in NY though...Every game in the big apple press wise is like the playoffs most other places...His dad started off in pinstripes so he knows the pros and cons. I've read where they are going to make a pitch for him.

I'd love to see Bo back...but we'll see...

Dylan Cease is an interesting signing and I think the Jays see something more in him and can get his ERA down somewhat. He racks up innings and strikeouts and with our defense I think he will do well here.

Cease was a tad of an overpayment in $ and term. It should also be noted after deferrals his contract's fair value is closer to $25M than $30M.

But Jays have been guilty of trying to "value" sign in the past, and then get left with slim pickings in January and February. Get the guy now, who cares if he is overpaid $3-4m, and the Jays window is now. If he's shit by 2030 deal with it then,
