Blue Jays "beat" Eric Lauer in Arb hearing this week:
Left-hander Eric Lauer lost his arbitration case to the Toronto Blue Jays and will be paid the team’s offer of $4.4 million rather than his ask of $5.75 million, according to an industry source.
This just in – Anthony Santander is out for 5 to 6 months as he goes for surgery. This could very well be the biggest bust in Blue Jays history. I don't even know what to say.
I can think of a few busts, but they are for terms of a few years -- not 5 years.
In terms of 5 year contracts, BJ Ryan was a bust in general for his 5/47 contract which was huge for a reliver in 2005. He was hurt in year 2, unplayable in year 4, and released for year 5.
That being said BJ Ryan was elite in his first year of the contract, and OK in the 3rd year. So at least we had some periods of good play. I doubt we will ever get above average play from Santander.
The Toronto Blue Jays open spring training with some major injury woes. The team announced that designated hitter Anthony Santander is set to undergo left labral surgery and will miss the next five to six months, while starter Bowden Francis is set to undergo ulnar collateral ligament surgery...

As A Yankee fan I want the Jays at their best....This isn't good news for the Jays...Hopefully they can fill these holes. Personally I always like Bassitt.
I know Santander never got on track but the potential was there...Labral surgery is hard one to come back from I understand.

I have also been thinking about the biggest busts in Blue Jays history. BJ Ryan is a good one. I also thought of Frank Thomas and Jack Morris's second year.

Mike Sirotka....Except for a few throw ins they basically traded David Wells for him. If I recall correctly he was hurt with a torn labrum when Gord Ash did the deal
Ken Dayley was an excellent reliever for the Cardinals in the 80's, but his career was cut short after experiencing vertigo.
The salary chart doesn't show 1991, but the contract was three years at about $5 Million, and he delivered five mediocre innings. That was fair coin in that era. Here are some other Blue Jays' salaries from 1991:
Roberto Alomar: $1.3 Million
Devon White: $800K
John Olerud: $294K
Joe Carter: $3.8 Million
Mookie Wilson: $1.63 Million
Jimmy Key: slightly less than $2 Million
David Wells: $800K

The Santander situation sucks. I would have liked to see him have another kick at the can and hopefully be healthy to have a fantastic rebound season. I also wish his setback happened much earlier, so he could have had the surgery back in December...Meaning he could return to the lineup by maybe April or May (even June....), now he could return in July or August....
As for biggest busts...I know he wasn't a free-agent pick-up, but Al Leiter was brutal. The Jays traded Jesse Barfield (fan favourite) for him, and I think he pitched something like 16 innings over his first three seasons....Always injured, and if I recall correctly, has surgery just after the trade...

I watched the John Schneider interview on YouTube with a few other Toronto media people on FaceTime chat yesterday. This was the start of spring training interview where he spoke about the Santander situation. The way he explained it was that they were on pace for a good physiotherapy rehab stint since the end of last season..... and then at some point in January, he started swinging and felt excruciating pain where surgery was inevitable.

The kick in the ass for Blue Jay fans was that AFTER he left the Jays he had some very good seasons with Florida and the Mets. He won another World Series with the Marlins, and made another World Series appearance with the Mets.
