I was reading the thread above on Studio 9 and I found the debate about sangwiches from Commisso`s vs. California interesting and distracting...there`s nothing better than an awesome Italian bakery with a lunch table for sangwiches, pasta, pizza, etc.

1. By a huge margin, my favorite place is San Remo`s on Royal York south of Evans Ave. High quality sangwiches, pasta, salads, and delicious homemade pizza. This place is excellent for traditional bakery items, too.

2. For quality of food, there are several places in Vaughan in the area of Edgeley/Pennsylvania that are excellent, although I have found prices to be a little steep at times.

3. When i`m in the Brampton area, i`ll usually stop at a place at the N/E corner of Torbram & Queen St. Good amount of food at a decent price, but not in the same league as San Remo`s.

What are some other favorites in and around the city?

Nino D'Aversa at Yonge north of Steeles has great bread. And I think they won the Bayview Post award for best meatball sandwich.

The original from back in the early 50's and still the best IMO, but only for veal sangwhicho and hot olives, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, the best, San Franscesco on Clinton Ave, south of College St. It's a hole in the wall, just enough room for a few patrons to stand in line, virtually all the time the line up is out the door onto Clinton. If you want a beer you go next door to the Monarch Tavern, I think it burnt down, but has been rebuilt, with your sangwhicho. Only the original store makes the best, all the other franchisees don't come close. I also like their meatball sangwhicho, but their veal sangwhicho is legendary. I drive miles out of my way to go there.

The Deli Fresh Sandwhiches from Italian, Portuguese Bakeries are fantastic in all respect as far as their taste, freshness, and the quality of bread they use, can definitely beat any sandwhiches even from so-called Franchise big name outlets any day! I usually vist such bakeries often to have a nice my choice of sandwhich with cheese and meat with lettece, tomato, and ofcourse & their condiments too with their freshly brewed coffee, puts a smile of my face, whereas the same quality you dont get at know sandwhich shops what Italian and Portuguese Bakeries offer. I dont ever eat the Mass Produced Canadian soft sliced breads, but always bring home the Italian Crispy bread which i slice myself at their bakery.
Italian or Portuguese Bakeries play a vital role in our lives, they are located in every nook and corner of our Ontario.

I've found the same thing, both there and down the street at Californias. Maybe it's the peeling paint containing all those years of sauce, oil, and onions.

I'd be careful going into that place, some shady characters there, lol. Know it quite well. I personally like LaRose Bakery, just north about a mile or so, over Messina, I use them both but LaRose gets the nod IMO.

Both those places sound good and are not that far for me. Messina sounds like it has a bit more 'spice' to it....the kind of place where I can imagine a scene from the Sopranos as I go for a veal sangwich and a Brio [insert something here]

Shady characters?

Just an Italian family that fights all the time - mainly the brothers. (Comic relief sometimes.) It can be a bit of a circus I admit, but I get a kick out of them. The food is fantastic though.

If you are in Durham, an italian bakery place called Brnuno (sp?) Bakery, located on the North East corner of Kingston Rd and Westney, inside the plaza near Pizza Piazza. Their veal sandwich, egg plant pamar and other items like pasta, meatballs, rice balls, oh my, were delicious. It is worth a visit.

Baker's Table, Bloor, south side, west of Ritson in Oshawa. The bread there is made on the premises and is to die for. I don't recall if they have a hot table, however.

Don't jump to conclusions too quickly, there are customers there too, not just the owners. Do you know where Messina is? Not the bakery, lol, but the town?

Messina is a town on the island of Sicily. A port town made famous for the successful allied landing for the invasion of Europe in WW2, lead by Gen. Patton. Also the US-Sicillian mafia was called upon for there help for that event.

I totally agree. All others are pale imitations. Ask them to notch it up a bit with hot peppers.

Oh yea, forgot about that, I always ask for hot peppers, it goes great with the hot green olives, you need a beer or two, lol, to go with that next door at the bar.

You won't be disappointed.

But the lunch counter is best at lunch, and it's closed on Sundays (the counter, not the store). They have great flat pizza as well. 2 for 1 after 4 p.m. and it's fresh, not stale.

Don't buy their pies. Dagos don't know how to make good pies. Other than that, I love the place.
