In general, a proportional response is the right response, be that kill 1 for 1 or 2 for 1 or higher, but there should be a limit. You have to also consider those who are displaced and the amount of destroyed buildings.
Right now I think there are about 3k Palestinian deaths, several hundred thousand displaced and about half of all residential buildings in Gaza destroyed, and food/water/electricity cut off. Israel has exceeded a proportional response IMHO.
Israel will not be able to eliminate Hamas any more than the US was able to eliminate ISIS in Afghanistan. To set that as Israel's goal is to say everyone in Gaza is fair game.

Seeing as everybody including Hamas knew that this would happen, they were pretty fucking stupid to set things off, and it means that you have no moral high ground with which to advocate for their plight. that will not stop Israeli plan to eliminate Hamas. The biggest impediment to a 2 state solution is Hamas. When Hamas is eliminated the Palestinians will have a greater chance at sovereignty. I know this will dissappint you.
