Islamic schools vs. Sex Education - getting our priorities straight

In a strip mall in northwestern Toronto, behind a blank storefront, old wooden desks are lined up in rows of three. At 3 p.m., children pour into the parking lot carrying books, while a little girl and boy stay behind at their desks, giggling and copying vocabulary from a blackboard while they wait to be picked up.

The school opened in September and has 30 students. Their six teachers lead Somalian and Arabic language lessons on top of the regular curriculum, plus Islamic studies.

They’re poorly paid, as tuition is only $250 monthly per student. But there’s a waiting list of more than 200 and the teachers have been promised that the school will balloon, along with their salaries, as soon as its directors can find a bigger space.

Called Rauf Academy, it is one of a handful of similar brand-new schools in the Toronto area, a legacy of parental anger over Ontario’s new sex-ed lessons that promises to outlive this year’s protests, such as a day of mass absences planned for Thursday.

“We heard the rumblings that a lot of parents are going to remove the kids, so we said, well, that might give us the kick-start, the momentum we need,” said Rauf Academy’s director, Yacoob Bayat.

His staff count two other homegrown schools nearby in Etobicoke, and another school director says two more opened their doors in Mississauga a month ago.

The sex-ed curriculum took effect in September, although its lessons won’t be taught in Toronto schools until later this year. Mr. Bayat said the province made another mistake by not reaching out to protesting parents, leaving them feeling there would be no meaningful religious accommodation.

Islamic schools have long gotten their starts in Toronto with bare-bones operations like this one. But Mr. Bayat and other school leaders say their ultimate goal is to create an alternative for Muslim families, a community-funded system of free education. So far 11 schools are working together as an informal board.

“As crazy as it sounds, maybe this was a good thing. Maybe this is what the community needed to galvanize and to do something,” said Mr. Bayat, a car mechanic originally from South Africa. “Communities in general, they know we’ve got a problem, but unless somebody takes the lead, nobody really does anything.”

Others in Toronto’s Muslim community say they don’t want parents to lose sight of the benefits of regular public education.

“The level of quality is really high,” said Rabea Murtaza, a mother and college teacher who is a member of a two groups supporting the new curriculum. “And if you walk away, you lose the opportunity to make any difference at all.”

Yes, the Muslim version of the three R's. Glad to see that they are teaching young CANADIAN children what is truly important and useful in life.

As opposed to Jewish schools or Catholic schools? Or the Polish, Hungarian and Ukrainian weekend schools that kids used to be sent to back in the 70's?

Ethnic education is pretty commonplace in this city.

Really?

I'm not aware.

Sorry if I don't agree that teaching any religion, or languages such as Somalian are appropriate subjects to be taught in primary school in Canada. Your average school day is 5 hours? And you're going to waste how much time teaching Islam, Somalian, and Arabic? This will be a huge detriment to any kid as they advance in age towards any higher education.

(I could care less what is taught during the weekend, more power to them if they want to enrol their children in whatever school on the weekends.)

These are day schools, not weekend language classes.

I'd rather these kids be taught an outdated sex ed curriculum in public schools than have no exposure at all.

On CTV news tonight they showed the principal of the Thorncliffe park school, upset because besides the parents protesting the sex ed curriculum, today they also complained that some of the teachers were Gay.

They mention LANGUAGE studies ON TOP OF THE REGULAR CURRICULUM plus ISLAMIC STUDIES (what's that? Religion?)

But your point in post #4 is valid.

Can they squeeze such language studies within a day and cover the regular curriculum?

Three Muslim schools in the Greater Toronto Area scored perfect marks in the Fraser Institute’s annual ranking of Ontario elementary schools.

This Report Card on Ontario’s Elementary Schools 2015, ranks 3,037 public and Catholic schools, and a small number of private schools, based on nine academic indicators derived from the results of province-wide tests of reading, writing, and mathematics skills.
For the 2013-2014 school year, the following Islamic schools all received perfect scores of 10:

The Islamic Foundation School in Scarborough
The IQRA Islamic School in Mississauga
The Olive Grove School in Mississauga

“Parents have repeatedly shown they value the ability to track the performance of their child’s school and compare it to other schools,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies. “Our report card allows them to quickly and easily determine if their child’s school is improving or worsening academically.”

Across Ontario, 180 elementary schools showed significant improvement in their academic performance over the past five years, according to the Fraser Institute’s rankings released on March 1.
“Educators at the 180 improving schools should be applauded for their success,” Cowley said. “Conversely, parents at declining schools should be asking the principal why the school’s overall rating is falling.”
The scores in reading and writing improved slightly across the province, while there was a dip in math results.

Meanwhile, a number of other Islamic schools across the province achieved a rating score of 9 and above, including:

The Islamic Institute of Toronto Academy in Scarborough (9.8)
An-Noor Private Islamic School in Windsor (9.6)
London Islamic School in London (9.6)
Safa & Marwa Islamic School in Mississauga (9.6)
As-Sadiq Islamic School in Thornhill (9.5)
Islamic School of Hamilton in Hamilton (9.1)
ISNA Islamic School in Mississauga (9.1)
Wali ul Asr Elementary School in Brampton (9.0)

They just don't want to integrate..when McGuinty was around they requested Sharia law and fortunately it was turned down.

That's not true, many of them have already integrated, there are countless holy scriptures on sex education, etc. I don't think the religion has anything to do with it, it's more of a culture barrier.

It's not just Muslims but more and more parents are dissatisfied with the public school system for a variety of reasons and turning to private schools or home schooling. Public schools are a cesspool of inefficiencies, waste ($143 to install a pencil sharpener), crime (stabbings, shootings, etc.) and overpaid teachers who don't want to work.

How much is our public school system costing per student?

I believe that if course content is mandated in the curriculum that it has to be taught in private schools as well. So they have to be taught the current sex ed curriculum.

My point with the ethnic schools info is that there has ALWAYS been ethnic education in this province. And the weekend stuff wasn't monitored for content. My Ukrainian-Canadian girlfriend back in the 80's grew up learning that Russians were the enemy and it was her duty to one day free Ukraine from the Stalinists. Plus a healthy dose of Taras Shevchenko and Bohdan Khmelnitsky.

No one cared back then because everyone hated the Russians and because Eastern Europeans weren't despised and examined under the microscope the way Muslims are today.

The fanatical, every letter/word/verse of the koran is vital to life are worried. Yet I'd bet a whole fuck load of money that the fathers in particular are the same ones who watch porn, drink and do a lot of things the koran tells them not to.

A co-worker who is muslim actually said he enjoys smoking weed once in awhile and I gave him a funny look and he said with a smirk (knowing I didn't care, but found it funny) "I said I was muslim, I didn't say I was a perfect muslim". lol

Bunch of fanatical hypocrites and the christian fanatics south of the border as well, fuck them.
(yes I didn't capitalize koran and muslim intentionally)
