Is There A Computer Printer That Doesn't Rip You Off?

I am getting tired of my PC printer: I buy some ink and it doesn't take long for the printer to run out of ink. I believe the computer companies do not make money off the sale of printers. They get their money from the sale of printer ink which gets used up very quickly. Is there a printer for PCs that does not drain our wallets? Perhaps a laser printer?

Inkjets do seem like a scam. They are priced low enough that you could honestly just buy a new printer every time you run out of ink. It's insane how much they charge for ink cartridges.

Some guys in the SC Forum would say: "If you can't afford more ink, don't print." That's what they would say when we complain about SC door fees.

I switched to a laser printer about 4-5 years ago and haven't looked back since. The vast bulk of what I print doesn't need colour and if I really need it I can access a colour printer at work.

So far I've changed my ink drum once and I'm about due for another. So they've lasted about 2+ years before needing changing. I don't print everyday but I'm definitely not a light user; probably moderate.

The drums cost around $50-75 a pop, depending on sales and if you buy no-name vs brand name.

agreed. what are you printing? i bought myself a monochrome laser printer for general documents and couldn't be happier. i remember the hell of trying to refill ink cartridges just to have them thrown out for a whole list of reasons.

I started buying my ink from 123inkcartridges.ca over a year ago and pay less than 1/4 of what the 'real' ink costs. I haven't had any problems so far and will never buy the ripoff manufacturer's ink again.

canadacomputers.com has some good deals on both black/color laser and multifunction laser printers (scanner/copier/fax/printer) But inkjets are expensize, and mostly a big scam.

The printer I have at home is seldom used, I only have it because it came free with the computer and I use the scanner. The ink dries up before it runs out. One way you can cut down on cost is to load your documents on to a USB key and bring it to Staples to print. They charge you a buck to unload the document and then it is the same price self serve to have your documents printed.

As others have said get a black and white laser. Price per page on a laser is typically 3-4 cents. On an ink jet it is 23-25 cents a page.

That's where we buy them from at work.

Ditto what others have said.

I have a B/W Laser (HP MFP 5035) for the bulk of my work and an Ink Jet for when I need colour (which frankly isn't that often).

The laser cartridge lasts forever for my one man office.

I've got the same problem many of you have--I hardly ever print anything. The most common things I print out are e-tickets, whether for a movie or a show, or for an airline.

At the moment I don't have a printer at home anymore. Last one died, and now if I need to print something like that, I try and do it at work. If I get really desperate I go to a copy center and print there--but that is SOOOO frustrating, especially if you're buying a ticket for a show the same day.

What I need is a good quality printer that can sit idle almost all the time without the ink drying up. I had so many experiences where I bought new ink, used it once, and the next time I needed it it was dried up and useless.

I've had an inexpensive Samsung laser printer for about 4 years now, and am on my second cartridge. I'm happy.

Also have an Epson color printer which has outrageous costs associated with replacement cartridges. Fortunately I found this source for inexpensive replacement cartridges: https://www.blankmedia.ca/

Others have already suggested laser printers; you can find some pretty inexpensive models these days - even colour lasers. It's rare that I'll print anything on my inkjet anymore.

For toner, I go to toners.ca

Did some work a coupla years back for a guy who used to rep printers; that's precisely the advice he gave. If you can stand the shopping and disposing of all the new packaging and old hardware, he was convinced buying a new 'comes with ink' printer every time the old one dried would save you money.

But you could say the same about your empty wineglasses, considering some winery's always got a gift pack at the LCBO. What a rip off!

I purchased an inkjet printed from a national office supply store after the salesperson discussed how many copies a month I was going to make. I also looked at the sizes of cartridges available and selected the "XL" size to get more copies per cartridge. Like most else, including SP's, many choices, many differnent prices and YMMV.

This might apply if the printer comes with a normal cartridge, but watch out for starter cartridges that contain only a quarter or half load of ink. These guys are masters are masters at getting every nickel out of us.
