This is like asking what's the best pizza or the best woman. It's an impossible thing to quantify, it depends a ton on what music and bands you like. There are some great drummers who you've never heard of and some guys drum on great songs who get zero respect.

Anyway, I think Larry Mullen Jr. is right up there, I love Dave Grohl but more as a song writer, Max Weinberg is fantastic and if Bruce Springsteen says he's the best, who am I to argue, Kenny Aronoff is great. Stewart Copeland totally challenged everything I ever knew about rhythm.

And the dead guys? Wow, I could talk forever.

If you want to be entertained and see some really funky drumming shit, check out this dude. Never been in a band, never done anything original as far as I can tell but I love his energy and love of the instrument.

In the mean time, go to your favourite playlist and listen to all the songs you've loved forever and pay attention to the groove created by the drum and the bass. You may find the song you've loved forever contains stuff you've never heard before!

By all accounts, Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Star is one hell of a great drummer. He is always in demand, including from Roger Daultry and Pete Townsend.

Jim Gordon was part of a SuperGroup that never was. Along with Gordon, Jack Bruce on bass and Frank Zappa on guitar.

Drummers retire when the strain of their work starts to catch up with them - that's what Bill Ward did.

Phil Collins dislocated a neck vertebrae while playing drums in 2007, surgery doesn't always work. From better days Phil Collins vs Chester Thompson in Paris. Collins comes in @ 8:58.

As someone who has played drums, I can say that Carter Beauford is on a level that only Neil Peart and Keith Moon have reached.

and Clune is just below them

My top 5

Hal Blaine
Jim Gordon
Jim keltner
Simon Phillips
As a drummer i generally hate drum solos but this one it great .
Levon Helm
I second Simon Phillips.

Phillips worked as a session drummer for Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker, Bernie Marsden, Jon Lord, Nik Kershaw, Mike Oldfield, Judas Priest, Mike Rutherford, Tears for Fears, 10cc, Pete Townshend and The Who. He was the drummer for The Who during the band's American reunion tour in 1989. He became the drummer for the band Toto in 1992 after the death of Jeff Porcaro.

So many greats, it's hard to pick a "best" drummer. Michael Shrieve put on a a hell of a performance at Woodstock when he was just 20.

Danny Carey from Tool is pretty darn good.

Spot on - was gonna add him if I didn't see his name - but after seeing your post mate - all is good in the world.
