Is "oriental" truly offensive?

But words have meaning.

Kareena Kapoor
And she is an excellent example. Yes the Indian Subcontinent is in Asia, but obviously Indians (especially someone from a northwest Indian background - her case half Punjabi half Sindhi ancestry) are not "oriental" in the sense of Chinese or Japanese. It is generally best to be as specific as possible in this case (as previously mentioned) in North America South Asian, or in the U.K. Asian or if one actually knew Indian.

Or in other terms: Northwest Indians are members of the Caucasoid rather than the Mongololid branch of the human family.

Most "Asians" Like the Japanese, Korean (?!?!?!??!?!) live on islands. The only Asian ethnic groups that do live on the continent are the chinese and Mongolians.

WOGS (Working In Government Service) started off as no big deal. It was written on the shirts of the workers and then it evolved into a derogatory term for Indians...or are they south asians???

"white" and "Caucasian" is too broad ... that could mean Brits, Irish, Greeks, Italians, Russians, Eastern Europeans, etc.

the term "oriental" has been used out of ignorance and alienation ... it implies that the person is foreign, not one of us

"Asian" at least implies that the person is a fellow countrymen ... just with an ancestry from a different continent
White or caucasian is not too broad at all. They refer to appearance, not culture or nationality. If I don't know what their nationality or ancestry is...how do I describe a white guy other than white guy of caucasian?

And I don't think orientals are not my countrymen. They are people whose ancestry I likely believe originated in what I think of as the orient.

When i was but a young lad, we were told that WOGS aka Woggies were the arab types that worked for Victoria in North Africa.

Then there was always Noddy's friend the Goliwog that clouded that description.

Of course the above has done nothing to clarify the issue, but this being TERB, why be precise.
