Is being rich important...?

Money can help you control your life instead of having to answer to others. This would make anyone happier and less stressed.

You won't have a landlord that can enter your shitty unit any time with 24 hrs notice.

You can get your teeth fixed instead of enduring pain.

You can eat healthier if you choose.

You aren't dependent on public transit.

You can meet friends in restaurants or go with them to shows.

Women will find you twice as attractive.

You'll get more respect in our money centred shallow society.

You can give help to others who need it.

You can see Janda every week. :p

When I look back at my youth, I was much more happier. Sure I make a shade more now but the only reasons I earn more is I have more responsibility, more headaches and more people to manage. As Biggie, Puff and Mase said, "Mo Money, Mo Problems." So no, money does not bring happiness.
So true.

The happiest time of my life was in University. I was 20 years old, with fuck all, I took the bus to school and I didn't care. A great dinner out was a panzerotti at Valentinos in Westdale and I was dating a girl I was crazy about. I had fuck all in terms of possesions and money, but you have your youth, you freedom, the "I don't care attitude" (and you really didn't, nor did you have to).

Now I am 40 and have stuff (with the associated debt) but I'd rather be 20 and have fuck all. When you are 20, you aren't hemmed in yet. Your life is before you.

Being rich is important to me. I have the financial freedom to do what I want when I want, which in turn makes me happy.

Btw... it has been said that money cannot buy happiness; to that I offer this: If you're going to be miserable, it's better to be a rich miserable SOB than a poor miserable SOB. See how that works??

It can buy more distractions...

Good responses so far but IMHO money CAN buy you hapiness...and not just the superficial kind.

Why do I say this? well....
1) It will allow you to do more of the things you enjoy, thereby making you happier because you're doing things you enjoy doing. (instead of slaving 20 hrs a day just to make ends meet).
2) Since you will be happier, you will probably be more attractive to the opposite sex. Have you ever seen a lady hit on a guy who is beat to death and worn out from slaving on a production line all day?
3) Many will disagree on this but money will allow you to buy better clothes, better car, and make you more noticable to the opposite sex. I'm not saying they necessarily will be gold diggers, just notice you more. (plus if you pull out a wad of c notes and peel one off for a tip well then lol)
4) Health: as stated, you will be able to afford vitamins, better food, leaner cuts of meat, fresher veggies, etc. Plus you probably won't have to go shopping for your own food or cook it. Some enjoy cooking but I DON'T
5) You'll probably be mortgage free or have a preferred interest rate (depends on the amount of your wealth) so that stress is out of your life.
6) You'd probably live in a safer neighbourhood so the health risks of getting mugged etc are greatly reduced.

From a purely material pov, you could find yourself an sp that you click with then book her for a year +. That is if you're single and don't want to worry about a gold digger.

Now money can't solve ALL your problems but it sure does help!

I think the AIM of getting rich provides focus and direction for alot of people. During the London blitz in WWII, there was a marked decline in reported cases of anxiety and depression. Psychologists then surmised the reason for this the fact that people stopped thinking about themselves and devoted their energies to each other. In other words, if you think about accomplishing the task at hand and don't let yourself be sidetracked by more existential questions, then you're more likely to be happy.

My brother-in-law's in real estate and so successful at it that he could probably retire. But he gets such a charge out of chasing the next deal that he'd never think of it. He's happy.

Well, isn't that what people who lived in tent city were doing? I don't need a job, I don't need material things, I don't need possessions.....

Perhaps you are one of those lucky people with both wealth and happiness??? If so, congratulations. But does wealth really bring happiness because you can do what you want with it??? Is there any logical necessity that wealth will bring happiness??? I can think of ex-billionaire, John Rigas (founder of Adelphia Cable and ex-owner of the Buffalo Sabres) who still have many millions hiding somewhere but is doing time in a federal prison. How about another rich man Ken Lay, who would rather die instead of rotting in prison??? Making all these money really bring them a lot a trouble, it seems like.

But we all know it's just a play of words in reality.
Here's a miserable version:

I'm homeless. Do you seriously expect I have home?
So I don't have a bed. It's f***ing cold to sleep on the street.

I have to survive. Do I have time to enjoy? You are kidding me!
I couldn't afford my education. So what? I'm ignorant, and I don't care.

I'm nobody. So you always ignore me, eh?
I'm really sick. Why the f***ing medication is too expensive to afford?

I'm dying. Why don't I retire? Hell... I must work for my living.
My wife has left because of poverty. Damn I even have no money to buy a Playboy magazine!

It's just another play of words too. :D

Money is a tool
Much like a plow was to our grear-great-great-great grand parents. At that time the would plow a strip of land to grow what they needed. Today we use cash for this. When there is extra cash we use it for recreation.

Is it important? Yes is too much a handicap? This is determined by each person.

Money does not buy you all that you want. I have what others would describe as the dream house and a nice car with no debts. My life is relatively
complete, however, I was much happier 20 years ago when I had nothing
and no responsibilities and could do whatever the fuck I wanted. Today, I am overweight, overworked, overstressed and plain tired of all the freeloaders
that have attached themselves to me that I now support. It pisses me off when I think that I have created a safe environment for others to be completely irresponsible in, while creating more stress for myself. I often wonder whether I should just tell everyone to go fuck themselves and sell it all and move away...get rid of the family and all those who have become a burden to me....get back in shape and travel like i did 20 years ago.

If you have money, you can afford to simplify your life, get a divorced, hire a trainer to get fit or travel to escape for a few weeks.
Money isn't keeping you tied down, you're freer than the guy scraping by to keep a roof over his head.
If the job is too stressful, you have the luxury of changing careers.

Money helps - it's how you use it and what you do that makes the difference.
On the other hand, you can be fully content with a simple life as well...

Well, then why don't you? I mean if you're so seriously unhappy with the way your life turned out, then I am sure there are things you can do to correct it.

I have to ask: Would you rather have all the stresses and be in debt up to your ass? Believe me: you have the same hassles and problems that any family has (maybe not EXACTLY the same problems but every teen goes through growing pains for eg.)

I just love it when say a Lawyer complains that he is working all the time and can't spend time with his family or that his kids don't appreciate what they have. Well, wake up and smell the coffee. Everyone tends to work too much, get stressed, and have problems with their kids not appreciating what they have. Unless you are an ethiopian there is always going to be someone somewhere who has it harder than you.

Frankly I'd rather work 18 hrs a day, for $300.000.00 a year than 18 hrs a day for $40,000.00 a year.

Another example: I want to get my eyes lazered. It will cost me $2000.00. I have to work 100 hrs for that money. At 3000K a year you have to work 13 hrs....see the difference?

On the other side of the coin: I had a coworker say to me about his boss: why is he so stressed? He makes over 100K a year while I'm squeeking by on 40. I said to him: Well, he probably has a house worth 700 K, your's is 200K. Your kids go to public school, his to private. You probably owe $15K on your car, he probably owes 40K...it is all relative. While his income may be higher, his debt ratio is probably the same.....

The trick is to make a lot of money and then retire early enough so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labour. Either that or build a company that can basically run itself, then live off the residuals. (that's why I disagree with recording artists etc doing something once, then living off that one act forever)

That will be ideal and terific! But don't know what kind of company can run itself and let you enjoy the residuals?

I've worked for 2 that the owners were never there...I mean NEVER. They had good upper management who ran the place and the owner took the lion's share.....I also worked for 1 where the owner was only there once a week at most. He'd come in for payday to sign the payroll cheques etc and that would be just about it.

For eg: Canadian Tire. The owners (the billes family) were NEVER there after AJ became too infirm.

I once was approached by a group who wanted me to start up a company to augment their current crop. During the interview process I said " I know the industry but I don't know squat about running a company so the first thing I'd have to do is hire a good business manager". The lead investor said to me "you just won over half the votes with that statement...."
