Alas, the Galaxy iii can take a run at the iPhone 4s for the second most popular smartphone....

iPhone 5 Usage Surpasses Samsung Galaxy S III After Less than 3 Weeks on Market

Apple and Samsung are unquestionably two of the top players in smartphone marketplace. Following the release of Apple’s iPhone 5 on September 21st, Chitika Insights was interested in comparing the Web usage rates of the newest phones from both manufacturers. To quantify our latest study, we conducted a user agent analysis on millions of mobile ad impressions, spanning a 7-day time frame from October 3rd through October 9th, 2012. Looking solely at impressions coming from the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III, we were able to observe the difference in Web traffic volume between the two devices, depicted in the figure below:

The Galaxy S III has been available in the U.S. for nearly four months, and posted impressive sales figures – even beating out domestic sales of the iPhone 4S in August 2012. However, only 18 days since the public release of the iPhone 5, the newest Apple device has overtaken the Galaxy S III in terms of Web traffic volume. Record-breaking sales numbers, along with new 4G browsing speeds which encourage data usage, are the most likely explanation for this tremendous growth. This latest shift in the mobile ecosystem is not welcome news for Samsung, which has positioned its device as a direct competitor to the iPhone 5.

While optimizing online content for both devices is still the smart move for businesses targeting mobile consumers, this comparison emphasizes iPhone users still being the most active – and hence marketable – users of the mobile Web.

Well to be fair Apple is the only issuer of their own OS. You should compare it to the whole Android market... but I don't wanna get into this fight!

Android is the very definition of a free market with many products to choose from so it is not really surprising that their market share is increasing over Apple and through competition their products technologically superior to Apple. So what has Apple users left to justify not being portrayed as sheep blindly buying a product without any comparison shopping but to point to the number of sheep as proof that somebody must know something.

Utilizing the same logic, the Toyota Corolla is the best sports car out there because so many people are buying it. You have to pity these people. As more and more like me go to the better phones, a core group will cling on to the Apple eventually hanging out in club houses and reminiscing the times that Apple actually lead the cell phone technology.

Samsung is Android. Have you seen the sales of HTC, LG, etc? They are absolutely being decimated by Samsung.

Even within Samsung you have Galaxy vs. Nexus... and with all due respect that's a developed markets view my friend. Alot of emerging market phones are of the other brand. But they all are using the Android OS so they should be counted.

Do you ever look for factual backup or are Apple users in a rearguard action of throwing any down to cling on to the Apple myth ?

Samsung accounts for 44% of Android sales. In the link that follows you will note that Apple's market share is now shrinking and accounting for 17% of the O/S phone market (worldwide). Of course you can cling to North America, then the US, then California, then the Apple employee's parking lot as their market shrinks.

Market research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that by 2013, cumulative shipments of Android smartphones will exceed 1 billion units. ....and approach 3 billion cumulative units in 2016. For comparison, cumulative shipments of Apple’s (AAPL) iOS platform ...aren’t expected to surpass 1 billion units until 2015. “The Androids are taking over the world of smartphones,” said Daniel Gleeson, mobile analyst for IHS.

I think we have a simple comprehension issue here - this thread isn't about the Android vs iOS marketshare (where Android is clearly the leader) but of a particular set of best selling handsets (iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3) where the iPhone 5 is kicking Galaxy S3 ass.....

I was responding to the statement that Samsung is Android as factually inaccurate.

Clearly although I'd say that Samsung is the only really viable handset maker on Android right now - the rest are niche

Good point, I'd say the iPhone 5 will surpass the Galaxy 3 on all three measures. The first and last are measurable, the second is subjective.

Biased point, I'd say iPhone will continue to world loose market share against Android (As pointed out factually and of course ignored by Apple fanbots).

I really think I could take a lump of crap with an Apple insignia and put it in an Apple fanbot's hands and they would giggle among themselves how great it is.

Quality ??!! - there are documented complaints that the aluminum case is so susceptible to scratching that people are complains they are coming out of the box already nicked and scratched. There are many complaints that WiFi reception is spotty and inferior to previous models. The Apple map app is - as acknowledged by Apple- flaky, inaccurate and even the company that sourced that maps have distanced themselves from it. As noted (and ignored by Apple fanbots) the display rated second to the Galaxy S 3 by independent studies has received complaints for light leaks. Oh, lets not forget the blue hazing problem that is affecting their camera.

Yes, yes it may just be catching up to the Galaxy S 3 in getting LTE and next year it could figure out how to incorporate NFC even though McDonalds as well as Visa themselves are rolling out terminals now (in many states Android phones are being used to pay for purchases). Oh well what ever dated technology the do put out - quality is number one.

Okay - so there is at least one item that is built well - the Apple CPU. Very reliable - most Apple fanbots point to it as a source of pride. And the should be because it is after all manufactured by Samsung. ;)

You continue to have a comprehension issue, this isn't iOS vs Andoriod (Android has vastly larger market share), this is the top two handsets - the iPhone 5 is kicking the Galaxy S3's ass. I noticed you skipped that point.

iOS isn't losing market share to Android, everyone else is:
