Time is precious? You bet it is. A client of mine bought 16 units for their sales force - 100% report back improvement in their time management week to week and sales are up 15% month over month, mainly thanks to the productive use of lunch meetings with the Ipad in hand.

Cheers
Zing!

I don`t know if this has been mentioned here or not BUT while Apple products are generally very good I have a problem with the proprietary stance that Apple takes in providing applications and other software for it`s products. I won an Ipod Touch late last year and while I don`t have Wifi where I live I was able to access the internet with it when I was in Toronto last Christmas. I tried downloading a few FREE applications / games from the Apple store and it wouldn't allow me to unless I had an account with Apple WITH a credit card. When I called them to inquire about this they then told me that I'd have to put some money into my account even though the applications that I tried to DL were free. Instead of using my credit card I purchased a Itunes gift card which I was told would be acceptable. Then after setting up an account with the gift card I still couldn't get the apps. that I wanted. After calling them again I was then told that the Itunes gift card was only good for MP3's in Canada and wouldn't allow me to even DL free apps. I told them that I've never paid for MP3's and since the card that I purchased was for apps. only I requested a refund..... They refused... Great customer service. Spent almost 6 hours over a weekend talking with several of their CSR's for nothing. I probably won't be purchasing another Apple product IF there are other choices available.
Sorry about the rant.

Point #1. a simple quick search and you'd be around that hitch in a minute. easy.
Point #2 yep. quite the shocker. so you're out 10 bucks. or what? not end of the world. and if you'd handled point #1 correctly, it wouldn't have happened.

I sure would be mad. at myself.

Correction to point 2. Apple now allows gift cards to be used to purchase apps.

I'm able to access the web interfaces just fine for ThinkOrSwim and Interactive Brokers on my iPad. The iPad browser does support javascript but not java.

If I recall correctly, you're a Blackberry user. How do you check your positions currently on the go? I'm assuming you were considering the iPad with 3G.
Haha, well I've actually found a way on my blackberry to get real time updates on my positions. Yes I said real time. It's an application that I've found a glitch for. Not really willing to share how I did it though as the glitch will be patched if people start using it. I may give it out if I'm pmed.

Also, I don't get this. So are you able to download programs from the internet to the pad or not? Lets say I want to download divx or something like that, will it allow you to?

What? I download mp3's or copy from my friends and simply add it to my iTunes library (as in select the folder, one click, and get a coffee). Then I plug in my iPad to sync - 300 mp3's ? 10 minutes while I reply to emails.

Done. I challenge anyone to find a faster method to load any tablet or portable mp3 device.

What do you mean faster way? I plug my blackberry in and open up the 'music' folder and just drag music right into it. I don't have the time to convert everything to that stupid itunes thing then upload to the pad. Why is apple so extreme in people having to use itunes.. and what about movies and shows? Your going to have to convert movies to itunes format, then upload it to itunes, then upload it to your pad. these things are just a headache.

just waiting for google to release its tablet.

Directly from the internet as it is, no. It's through iTunes or their App Store. I'm pretty sure jailbreaking it changes everything.

Again, I recommend Air Video for streaming video of all codec types via wifi. I have gigs and gigs and gigs of MKV's. I couldn't store them all if I wanted to.

Content is their ecosystem/platform.

Why doesn't Blackberry allow other mobile devices to communicate with BBM? =)

Everyone's got their own platform that they want absolute control over.

So your low resolution blackberry plays every audio and video format?

More like $25, at the time spent on nothing. But after reading djk's post I may have an account with Apple with $25 in it. Heading back down to TO next month for work I'll bring my Ipod and see if I can get access to the Itunes store. And no it's not the end of the world BUT they gave me wrong info and wouldn't resolve the problem when I acted on it, even after I proved it to them via their own account records. I didn't appreciate the way they handled this issue.

I agree it's a bit stupid to sell cards that don't really work. But that's what they do. If I bought an iPad expecting to be able to look at all those fancy web-sites, and then OMG! it won't play flash, I'd be upset too. Luckilly we can research devices prior to purchase. They all have pros and cons. All my friends were kinda worried about that credit card sign-up bit. I told them how to get around it (legally) and they did. It's complicated (that's what she said).

Oh. One more thing. The reason to have an account with no credit card attached is so you don't get dinged unexpectedly by the apple store. if i were you, i would create another for normal use and just keep that one withe the cc on it for special apps.

I can verify it does work. When I receive email receipts from iTunes, it clearly states in the top right hand corner -- "Billed To: Store Credit".

I had purchased $100 (set of 5 $20's) gift card from Costco for $80 around Nov/Dec last year. Since, they never expire, it's a great way to save money and increase your purchasing power.

Apple really knows how to get into your pants!
Wonder how much else you shelled out to the iBank???

I'll stick with Linux thank you and do ALL that you do with Apple, only it won't cost me one red cent!

With Linux no CC is needed and it's a better way to save money....

LOL!! I knew that comment would get the attention of our resident basement dwelling, landline only using troll.

Let me ask you a simple question. Do you believe that individuals should be able to charge for the content/IP they create? And do consumers have the right to purchase it if they agree with the price being charged?

Simple yes or no answer.

I knew it wouldn't take long.
Before purchasing an iPad, you have to decide what you are going to use it for. It is not a laptop replacement device. It is more a viewer then a doer. However it is great to keep up-to-date on forums, some basic fixes on pictures, and a great tool to keep up on all your readables in one place. With my (Kindle on Ipad app) I can purchse just about any book on my ipad... I have about 32 books. Also as a stock photographer I am able to do a shoot and then review all the shots. I rarely take my laptop on the road anymore. The iPad with my (LogMeIn app) allows me to log on to my studio or home computer and do anything that I need to do. My 2 cents... I had to quote ya Larry because I chuckle at alot of the iPad discussions .... You have to decide what you want to do and purchase the apps that will let you do it.

My Fave Apps
LogMeIn
Dropbox
Flipboard
Strobox
Kindle
Newsrack
PS Express
Photogene

I also have an iphone....and although I used to adore my BB... it is the touch screen that I love with these apple devices. Plus having a camera and video with me ... I can snap a quick shot where ever I am.

Right. i have a million pdf documents (well, you know). a quick search indicates it's difficult to transfer these files to a pdf reader on the iPad. Is that so? or is it as simple as copy them to a library directory and sync?

Yes I do have Itunes on my home puter. Only for syncing MP3's and charging. I've never bought anything through it. Never tried. Question though..... Can you purchase and DL free apps. on your non - Apple product and then transfer them to your Ipod during the "sync" / charging process? Never tried this but just a thought. I don't have access to wifi where I live so I can't access the Itunes store directly through my Ipod.
