Internet telephone

So I'm going to be travelling for work soon, and taking a laptop. Somehow, I'll be getting internet service. To cut down on telephone costs, I want to get into internet telephoney. So where to find out, what do you guys recommend?

I agree with asn: Skype's not a bad choice. I use it regularly for overseas calls.

For VoIP on my cell phone, I use Truphone. The rates are a bit higher than some other VoIP services, but it's still relatively inexpensive and the call quality is the best of the ones I've tried.

Im assuming you are getting voip to call back home. So here are some good options for that.

I liked the look of the MagicJack until I googled it, and there are some problems for some people. No live support, only email, and spyware, advertising, and no way to uninstall it even if you don't want to use it any more. Dammit, nothing is simple.

What cellphone carrier are you using? Many have no charge home calling and or five favourites. This includes no long distance.......

Oh yeah that special calling home thing is something I haven't considered. Actually I have a 7-11 phone (which is so convenient for hobbying) which doesn't have anything like that, but maybe I could get another phone. thanks for mentioning that.

Whenever I pick up our office phone and hear dead air I know that it is our owner calling from his vacation home in Florida where he uses Skype. He rarely has a problem using it at the office but I think his high speed provider in FL sucks.

I refues to use it at work when calling customers because the last thing I want to sound like is a pakistani call centre dude with all of the delays and echos. I don't do the Quicki Mart accent very well either.
