Well, I am aware that Canadian med schools do not allow any international student in.
Indian or otherwise regardless of how competitive they are.
They only allow permanent residents and citizens in.
But that is why am asking the question.
On the one hand we have shortage of doctors.
So what is the reasoning behind not allowing international students into Canadian med schools?
Try picture this scenario.
A medical school is to admit 100 qualified applicants into its
1st year class. As we have a shortage of doctors our government
suggests the school to increase the number of students accepted.
In response the school increases enrolment from 100 to 110 upon
receiving additional grants for extra facilities and teaching
staff. Now the school can easily select 10 of the most qualified students
below the top 100 already accepted to bring the size of the 1st year
class to the limit it can manage without making compromise on quality
of teaching and training. But someone suggests bringing in foreign
students to relieve our shortage of medical doctors.
For the medical school to admit 10 foreign students would
mean it has to reject the extra 10 qualified local students. You
may suggest acceptance of those foreign students has merit
provided that they are more qualified than those 10 local students.
But you also have to note that in the end it won't make difference
in the supply of doctors. And you can also be assured that the
next batch of 100 students in the pool of applicants not accepted
are just as good to become future doctors if not for the limited
spaces in medical schools.
