The moral of this story is, that all imperial conquests, from Genghis Khan, Alexander, The Romans, the spanish in South America, the british in Africa and India, the Japanese in Korea, the Nazi's, the americans in the middle east, etc etc. , have been justified by the desire to spread civilization, peace and democracy to other people.
Some conquerors were more lenient (or less brutal) than others. I knew Alex the Great and he wasn't a bad chap for a conqueror. The Brits arrived in Hong Kong as conquerors and the Hong Kong Chinese cried at their leaving 99 years later.

Al could be quite brutal. He had a habit of killing everybody in a city, if it did not surrender to his forces.

When I travelled in Mongolia, my guide told me that Genghis Khan was a peace loving man, who after he had unified Mongolia and created peace there, wanted to spread peace over the rest of the world. Mongolia is chock full of statues of him.

Just like them Vikings.

No, No, the vikings were the exception to the rule. They were generally peaceful traders, that wanted only peace, democracy and trade with the people they encountered in their quest for spreading peace and democracy. Only when the people they encountered were intransigent in their refusal to accept these ideal, did the vikings resort to violence. Afterall nobody denied them the right to defend themselves.

Now they're up to the newest invention......the printing press and the first book ever printed-the Gutenberg Bible. Previously everything was written by hand and involved pain stakingly long hours. Remember that throughout most of history ordinary people were illiterate! The only people who could read and write in the middle ages were the clergy and the nobility.
The printing press with movable type was in place by 1450. By 1500, all known books that had previously been copied were now available in print.

- probably the invention with the greatest civilization-changing impact, until power stations.

Watching History Television.........when the Mongol hordes invaded China led by Genghis Khan, he raped so many chinese women that it's estimated that 1 in every 200 people now, still carry his genes!
Given that in true cases of rape, the female body has ways of shutting the whole thing down*, I really doubt this is true. The more likely scenario is that Genghis Khan was quite attractive to the ladies and that they probably invited the sexual experience. It was in this way that his genes were spread far and wide.

*Recently established as fact by the Republican Party.

Hitler actually got tons of fan mail from women that were absolutely infatuated with him.

I think steam was next. It ushered in the industrial revolution.

It's estimated he was personally responsible for killing 40 million people.
40,000 women committed suicide rather than be raped and turned into slaves.
Children were slaughtered without mercy.
The captives had holes carved in the palms of their hands and then rope was strung through all their hands so they could be led like a chain gang on forced marches.
It's important to keep in mind that Mongol hordes did not invade just China but also much of Central Asia (including modern day Afghanistan), modern day Iran and Iraq and Russia as well -- one of the largest contiguous empires ever established in history. Therefore, the estimated 1 in every 200 people today would include not just those from China, but also people from Central Asia, Iran, and Russia as well (some of Genghis's descendants went out to conqueror and found their own empires, e.g. Timur, Babur who founded the Mughal empire in India). Some of Genghis's descendants in Russia became prominent aristocrats as well.

It should also be noted that in Afghanistan today, there is an ethnic group called the Hazaras who claim to be descendants of Genghis Khan and his Mongol horde, and frankly look either Mongolian or of mixed Mongolian and Persian stock, even though today the people speak a dialect of Persian.

Yes you're right. I should've stipulated that it's 1 in every 200 people that they said, not just 1 in every 200 chinese people.

How were the Mongols so militarily successful? I heard they were able to amass a mounted army of 150,000 men. Did Mongolia even have 150,000 men? Also, they fought European knights wearing cumbersome armour armed only with swords whereas the Mongols fired armoured piercing arrows.

The famous speech given by Queen elizabeth I to her troops before the Armada landed and depicted in many movies and plays, was written after her death. The actual speech was much less dramatic.

I won't argue with you. All the same, if I had to single out one single technology that we have, that I would least like to do without - the one at the very top of the tree - it would have to be power stations.

Not sure what the connection is to Genghis Khan, as to the Tilbury Speach there are three versons, at least one the Leonel Sharp verson was by an earwitness (but recorded decades later).
