Nope its $ 269 on Amazon with shipping and HST

Or

$79 on home depot

Although, I could care less about a hundred here or there. Its more about function and aesthetic... Would hate to penny pinch my life away.

Chears!

I only looked the firsst line on the page that came up from the link:

"Price: CDN$ 224.51
+ CDN$ 107.89 shipping

Mostly, the water collected in the barrel is run-off from your roof. The nutrients come from the bird shit that washes into the barrel. Good for the garden. Don't drink it though.
Certainly if you had the roof re-shingled recently you'll be seeing a good deal of the mini-gravel in the run-off. For years. Hopefully collected at the rain-barrel's filter, not building up in the bottom.

I don't think so, because the system is well designed and sealed to mosquitoes. "Sealed system resists mosquitoes, insects, and algae growth." I guess it is not 100% but I did not notice any problems.

BYLAW 255-2004 https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&sour...TdPuDeVtXvgt-p65A&sig2=2hUAYnIzK5CtfG9EEFzo4g

It mentiones..."creation of habitats for mosquitoes and rodents, ..." I interpret it that this is not being violated and reasonable precautions are taken to prevent this.

Municipality actually prefer this system for water storage and balance requirements... It helps in prevention of flooding in a whole system and overwhelming the treatment plants so in the big picture you are doing a positive thing for the SWM system including the sewer system and rivers during peak periods as it is slowly discharged back into the system. This should be encouraged.

Unless you interpret it differenly...I am not calling 411 to find out and get flagged...lol

If it has a screen or is covered, then you're good.

I had a by-law officer warn me about loose tires partially filled with rain water as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and WNV.

Where did you develop this belief?

There is no nitrogen in rainwater. And lightning generates ozone, not nitrogen.

Nitrogen only reacts with oxygen at high temperatures and pressures associated with lightning. During a lightning storm, NO2, nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide form and nitrogen oxide reacts with water to form nitric acid. Nitric acid makes water suitable as a nutrient for plants.

The classic anti-larval was a bit of light oil filming the stagnant water, and suffocating the larvae. Kerosene was usual, but no reason not to use food-grades if you're fussy. At five for a dollar you also could buy feeder goldfish from any petstore with an aquarium section; they'd grow fat on the larvae. But if you were unwise enough to buy a barrel with an inadequate screen, putting a cheap kitchen strainer over the inlet would do the trick and not leave you with conscience issues about chemicals or fishkills.

Think of the few mosquitoes you may breed, who might manage to make it back out into the wider world, as your personal effort to restore the urban bat population that's been ravaged by deadly white-nose fungus.

Question for barrel owners: what do you do with it in the winter months? I've been looking online at what Home Despot has to offer (looking for something stylish). They say to drain the barrel over the winter to avoid freezing. Well, I've still got water coming down the downspout even in winter (melting snow, cold rains, etc.). If I've lopped 2' off my downspoout to accommodate the barrel, won't that just make a bigger mess if the barrel is in storage?

Would appreciate some insights here. Thanks!

I wouldn't use them and risk it...they say its organic on deacription, whatever that means

You know what I find funny? So many people so earnestly promote stuff like the health benefits of "juicing", chinese medicine, pesticides and organic bs when they don't really have any real knowledge except what they are fed by the media and those selling this shit.

Yet when there is a scientifically proven natural pesticide that they don't have any knowledge of, they don't trust it.

Nothing at all toxic or harmful about the naturally occurring soil bacteria in these pucks. It is as natural of an insecticide as is possible.

I just disconnect the system and restore to original and place my barrels by the shed over winter during my winter clean up.

Yeah same as it's funny that people disbelieve all the nonsense being shoved down their throat and distrust everything and everybody that they forget to live and enjoy life. Who gives a fuck I say...just do what feels right, use the research that feels right to you and live and learn. So fucking what you are wrong or right, as least you don't question every little action and everybody a thousand ways a thousand times before deciding on what to do.

Just live a little and fuck the little stuff, not worth it.
