i did i was there for 9 years they closed down the apartment, building inspectors deemed it an illegal apt they are no longer renting it. i moved on to a temporary place paying way below what the property was worth. unfortunately i gave my notice to move because i thought i had an apartment in a building, only to find out they had rented it out to someone else. the lady i'm currently renting from has rented this place out so i have to move.
you have two years to sue the owner of the property that caused you to become ill.

2.1 Key Responsibilities of SIN Holders

As a SIN holder, you have four key responsibilities to protect your SIN:

Never give out your SIN unless you are sure it is legally required or you are satisfied it is necessary.
You must provide your SIN to take part in some government programs and/or services. For example, the Canada Revenue Agency requires your SIN when you file your income tax, or when you apply for Employment Insurance (EI) or Canada Pension Plan (CPP)/ Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) benefits
In the private sector, you must provide your SIN to your employer for income tax and benefit purposes. You must also give it to financial institutions for accounts that pay interest
Except when required for government programs and services, it is your decision when to share your SIN information and with whom.

Give some asshat my SIN number when it is not required. Like fuck. If you can't figure out how to do a credit check without that information, you are in the wrong business.

Wouldn't calling a realtor from a block number look kind of shady?

ok so i am looking for an apartment
this so called Realtor sees my ad and contacts me offering to do my leg work for me. so i'm like ok i ask how much or whats the catch, he says he gets paid by the landlords and no catch. so i give him the details of what i need he comes back about 10 mins later with two property's i've seen a few months ago. one isn't too bad so i tell him i'm willing to meet to fill out the application. he emails me to call him so like always i block my number and call him up. retard goes do you have a drivers license i'm like no i don't drive, then he asks for my sin number i asked why he tells me he is going to use it to confirm i'm not a terrorist.
are you fucking kidding me i say, hes like maam why are you getting angry?
again i repeat ARE U FUCKING KIDDING ME i was born here douche click.
wow out of all my years of renting i thought i heard it all guess not

sorry for the rant just needed to vent

all i can say is WOW FUCKING WOW
What Luv I believe is saying is if you are going to greek me at least wine, dine, ask for consent and then lube me up first. There was logic in her reaction not excess drama.

All of you landlords who have this arrogant attitude about people's SIN number need to realize that at some point in the cycle getting tenants will not be like fishing in a barrel.

Anyway the real estate agent sounds like he has no game. If he cannot ease into the where and why of all of these requirements, and respect that some of them are quite offensive, then he is going to get the logical reaction Luv gave him.

actually i'm a great tenant i'm quiet clean and always on time with the rent. there are far worse people to rent to i'm sure.
and landlords should be ok with that because you said so. Renting a property is not a big joke on the owners pov. If you can't provide Identification they would ask for something credible just to do some background check or get your SIN to know if you're legit. I doubt they will even check the entire SIN #. sometimes just having 1 is ok. or will probably check the first digit. But if you give a realtor attitude just because he asked for one, then, good luck finding someone who won't.

Don't blame the realtor...it is FINTRAC a government of Canada requirement that came into play after 9/11. All real estate transactions require this info be filed.
Keeping democracy safe....one apartment lease at a time. :)
I had to fill out FINTRAC info as a vendor of a commercal property. But I agree with 4Tees, it's for credit check purposes. Your SIN should have your proper legal name for the drawing of the lease and in case to sue you if you don't pay.

The SIN has your legal name on it in case you have to sue the tenant.

And if you don't want to provide a landlord with your SIN, you're the wrong renter for him. To each their own.

Correct. If you can't provide proof of your real identity with a DL, then a SIN is appropriate. When I fill out credit app forms for a corporation, I don't put that personal info because the corporate legal info should suffice, especially if it's been around a long time, supported by bank and supplier credit references.

i have references from my landlady {who has known me for 2 years}, my boss {who has known me for 7 years} my manager {who has known me for 5 years}, my coworkers {who have known me from 2 to 6 years}. so what did i pay them all to lie for me so i could get an apartment? and you don't need a sin number to do a credit check

ps i didn't give him attitude because he asked for my sin i freaked out on him cause of the terrorist comment

in my mind once you have DOB, legal name, and sin number. your good to go with identity fraud
no fucking thank you i'll live on the street first

Well gee, while I am at it, why not give him all my banking information and passwords to.

I'll take the government side on this

BTW for all you idiot landlords. I mean fuck, the government does everything it can to make you the tenant's bitch, one would figure you should know better if you are going to be in that business. But continue to pretend that you actually own your units.

You are not required to provide your SIN number to any other private-sector organization or person such as a landlord. There is no law preventing private-sector organizations from asking for the SIN for other purposes, such as identification, but they do need to make people aware that collection of a SIN is optional and not a condition of service.

Our Office recommends that no private-sector organization request the SIN from a customer, and that no customer give the SIN to a private-sector organization, unless the organization is required by law to request it.

Commissioner's Findings
Settled case summary #19
SIN not required when signing apartment lease
Complaint

A student complained that he was unable to rent an apartment without providing his SIN to the property management firm.
Outcome

The property manager told us that his firm required the SINs of potential renters in order to verify identities, conduct credit checks, and, if necessary, contact collection agencies.

However, the federal government, in an effort to prevent the SIN from becoming a universal identifier, issued a policy limiting the collection and use of the SIN to specific acts, regulations and programs. While there is no legislation that prevents organizations from asking for the SIN for other purposes, such as identification, organizations that are subject to the Personal information Protection and Electronic Documents Actmust clearly indicate to the customer that provision of the SIN for identification purposes is optional and not a condition of service.

The manager therefore revised the lease agreement so that a driver’s licence is the only piece of identification required. He no longer requests SINs from potential lessees.

Upon learning of the changes the property management firm instituted as a result of his complaint, the student and the Office considered the matter to be settled.
