Don't blame the realtor...it is FINTRAC a government of Canada requirement that came into play after 9/11. All real estate transactions require this info be filed.
Keeping democracy safe....one apartment lease at a time. :)
not neccessary for leases only purchases

Landlords have every right to ask for SI number. Tenants don't have to provide it since it's optional under federal law. However, landlords have to check out the tenant and if a tenant can't provide any appropriate ID for landlord's to do a credit and/or other checks, then the landlord has the right to reject the tenant. There are so many dead beat tenants out there today that landlords are tightening up their checks and rightly so. Many prospective tenants don't have a driver's license, or at least claim not to, or any other appropriate ID to do a proper check so we resort to SI, if they can't give it than no go. The landlord has every right to reject a tenant if he/she can't determine the credit worthiness of a prospective tenant. Try doing a credit check on someone with the last name Chan, Mohammed, Smith or Brown, Khan, Rossi, Cruz, etc... with no proper ID. I was burnt on this over 30 yrs ago and it won't happen again.
Sorry, you have every right to ask for proper identification, whatever it may be. BUT you cannot refuse anyone because they don't provide a SIN. No exceptions.

Understand that there are lots of renters who are scumbags who damage property and don't pay when rent is due, so the landlord or property owner has to do everything they can to safeguard themselves.

You never have to give out your SIN for anything other than employment.

Of course, if you are applying for credit, loan, rent, etc. they can ask for it; but legally you have no obligation to do so.

L4L is right not to divulge her SI #, but if she blocked the number, the card would confirm her legal name but that still doesn't prove it's her per se unless you have photo I.D.

As someone said, a passport would do. I'd say even an Ontario Health Card in combination with some other piece of I.D.

Wow is right ! The pull off the biggest Bank heist in history ( they call it 9/11 ) and bring in the Patriot Act over the Constitution. Start a bogus War on Terror ( they haven't even won The War on Drugs ). And now Harpo invites the FBI into Toronto and now your being asked you SIN number for an apartment.

What a bunch of douche bags !

BS
You really need to get out more. You've been reading waaaay to many conspiracy theories online. Or watching too much tv or something.

I didn't read the entire thread so sorry if this has been mentioned already. I believe you can actually get an official ID at any Service Ontario centers. I saw the ad when I was lining up to renew my DL a few weeks ago. This ID is meant for people who don't have a DL.

ha on my part time wages not likely
i have no interest in buying i'd rather rent my life away leave the insurance, property tax, utilities, maintenance, etc to someone else.
LOL WOW!!! Ya and at the end of the day you will have nothing...... Or you could had put the money to good use and after all is said and done have property which will help you later in life.
Anyways it's common sense that one needs to show ID or passport and NOA's to show who you are and what amount of income you made over the past two or so years. As will as your past pay chq to show you are working.
