Don't blame the realtor...it is FINTRAC a government of Canada requirement that came into play after 9/11. All real estate transactions require this info be filed.
Keeping democracy safe....one apartment lease at a time. :)

Don't be so defensive!

If I am going to rent an apartment, i want to make sure WHO YOU are? can you afford it? ask for references? etc etc. I want your licence number if you have it, I want twelve cheques up front, etc etc

Cause lets be frank..someone in their forties..still looking to rent in the Toronto area, raises my radar a little as a landlord. Sure, everyone's circumstances may dictate different needs, but still no matter what the need, it is EVEN MORE PRUDENT to get credit checks etc done in this age of identity theft, and computer communications!

IF I AM THE REALTOR in this transaction..I want to deliver a well researched tenant to the landlord!!

Cause as a Landlord I want to make sure that..if you skip off...I can sue your ass!

Take a breath girl..and get back at it.

Wow is right ! The pull off the biggest Bank heist in history ( they call it 9/11 ) and bring in the Patriot Act over the Constitution. Start a bogus War on Terror ( they haven't even won The War on Drugs ). And now Harpo invites the FBI into Toronto and now your being asked you SIN number for an apartment.

What a bunch of douche bags !

Blocking your number would send up a flag that you are a flaky customer. Being evasive, wanting to meet in coffee shops, etc. are more flags.

Real estate agents must identify the people they are working with for a number of reasons, sale or rental. If the transaction meets some requirements it has to be reported to FINTRAC.

FINTRAC has to do with money laundering, terrorism, tax evasion, etc.

I agree with the above posters. DL or SIN would be required to confirm identity. Furthermore SIN could be required for a credit check but you would have to consent to that.
I have no problem getting credit checks without a SIN number. All I need is full name and dob. Current address helps but is not necessary.

ok so i'll wait another 5 years to rent, then i'll be too old to skip out lmfao. really the only reason i'm looking is because i had mold issues in my place {due to a cracked foundation}, that was making me ill and the slum lord wasn't willing to spend thousands of dollars to fix it.
i have everything needed to apply{even references coming out my ass from regular people who have known me for years}, and really even apartment buildings don't require to have your sin it is optional. no postdated checks needed i do it by direct deposit.

If the mold is making you ill you should be suing that land lord.

I've been a landlord for many years and I always ask for a SIN number, not necessarily to see if the tenant is a terrorist but I always do a credit check and it's part of my requirements. If anyone doesn't want to, that's fine with me, just move on to another property.

I'm not aware of any government requirement to check tenants out if they're a terrorist but if so I wouldn't be surprised. It's to protect our country, if you're not a terrorist, then it should be no problem and give the number, if you are on any terrorist list, then I'd worry.

Absolutely, call the Toronto Board of Health and get them in, the landlord is in deep shit. Don't fool around with mould, do it now!

Like you stated, Sin is optional. If you can't provide DL, what do you think the realtor would ask next in replace of the DL. That's how the way it goes. He's probably tryint to crack some joke on the terrorist thing...but not expecting to get his head bitten. You're better off dealing with realtors than direct owners. Realtors would make the sale and leave you from there. Owners will give you short notices to visit and check and give surprise visits...good luck looking for an apartment.

i did i was there for 9 years they closed down the apartment, building inspectors deemed it an illegal apt they are no longer renting it. i moved on to a temporary place paying way below what the property was worth. unfortunately i gave my notice to move because i thought i had an apartment in a building, only to find out they had rented it out to someone else. the lady i'm currently renting from has rented this place out so i have to move.
