I subscribe to a newsletter from Consumer Reports named "on health". In the latest issue there is an article titled "Erectile trouble may signal heart disease." The article says that if you have erectile dysfunction or unreliable erections that the cause might be blockages in the arteries of the penis and that such blockages might indicate blockages elsewhere in the body such as the heart. The article also points out (as we have been hearing for a long time but it can't hurt to repeat it ...) that if you are already at risk for a heart attack or stroke that the ED drugs can increase that risk.
The article is not precise about the research it is based on except to say that it was conducted by Italians.
