I know lots of people who can sit down and enjoy a game, and have no idea of what the formation is for either team, the role of positions, the characteristics and abilities of individual players and how the other side acts to counter those things. Sure you can follow the game, but if you don't understand those things, I don't think it's possible to really appreciate it fully. In soccer, the way these things come together make (for me at least), even a 0-0 draw a potentially fascinating match. Sometimes those are especially so. What's special about soccer is that each nation brings its own brand and approach to all of the foregoing. What we saw today with Germany is a crystal clear example of that. No other country could wage an attack just like that.
