I just finished some light reading during a flight back to Toronto. I picked up Carles Barkleys book - "I may be wrong but I doubt it".

Interesting reading - it's not a book about sports exactly....but more of a book on social studies (as Barkey sees it) lol. He made a few interesting points - he examines serious social issues like racism, poverty, politics and education. The foreword was written by Mike Wilbon (from ESPN's PTI).

Has anyone else read this book? What were your thoughts on it?

What an arrogant title. Perfect for an ass like Barkley.
Hey tithunter,

if you will just look past the headlines that some of these pro-athletes get, you might just learn something...

Barkley has always been outspoken, and his big mouth has gotten him into trouble on many occassions. But this guy has really tried to straighten himself out.

I first started having respect for him when he uttered a statement (I have paraphrased)
"Professional athletes should not be your children's role models" and "Your children should not be looking at professional athletes and other famous people for guidance on how to live their lives"

I was pretty outraged, and the media just shit all over Barkley for such a statement saying that he was shirking his responsiblility, and that fame has a price...

After that, I read an article on him in some basketball magazine where he talked about that statement....His explanation was simply that parents need to take responsibility for their children and lead by example. Parents should strive to be their childs role model, not some stupid pro athlete or movie star...

He also went on to say that this was aimed at the many black men who are not taking their responsibility for their children.

Believe it or not, there is much more depth to Mr. Barkley than people want to give him credit for.

I first started having respect for him when he beat the crap out of Barney on Saturday Night Live. Seriously.

It was interesting to see Barkleys outlook on basketball though. He's one of the few players who played with the old school guys (Moses and Dr.J), the Dream Team guys and the younger up and comers.

It's interesting to see how he candidly commented about the state of the game now and how the new attitude of the younger players is affecting the game - and not for the good. I got a kick about the comment Dr.J gave him about being "caretakers of the game". Interesting.

It would be nice if some of the players now can apply that theory. There are a few players today (like Ray Allen) that can, but; they're few and far between.
