SCOTUS could have stayed out of it if it went to the House.
In fact, they would have stayed out of it and justified it quite easily, since that is what is supposed to happen if there is a failure to win the electoral college - it goes to the House.
It was still a long shot, and just because they managed to fuck up the system doesn't mean it would have shaken out the way they wanted.
But even though they ended up at the "storm the capitol, fuck everything up enough to tip it into controversy, and then push for the win in the chaos" plan (which was not great odds) doesn't mean they didn't almost manage to get to the "tip it into controversy" part.
