Okay, I just read in Metro that Mayor Rob Ford blasts Metrolinx plan for HST, gas hikes and parking levy.

So, what do you girls think?

As long as they use the money as ADDITIONAL budget for public transit, I'm all for it.

By that I mean the existing budget to Metrolinx does not change and that this "new money" gets added to the infrastructure budget.

I don't want them saying, "Ok, we've got 2 billion in extra cash from this tax, let's take away a billion that was already earmarked for Metrolinx and use the 2 billion in new cash to make up the difference and we are still 1 billion ahead.

And that the money has to go for infrastructure costs, not operations costs.

Aren't we paying too much tax already? Also, is this HST hike only apply to GTA? If it is, what would happened to the GTA businesses compared to those in say, Markham or Mississauga that don't have the HST hike?

$10 per hour poon tax would do the trick (hehe)
Ok lets see we've got a gas tax , we have a tire tax., we have an ac. tax, we pay tax on top of tax on top of tax for booze, We pay PST, GST, and income tax
If they start taxing pussy (no offense to the ladies) then Im going to be flogging my log at home, and they will probably find a way to tax that too. the bastards!!!

If it meant a sustainable and effective public transit system I'd accept an increase in taxes. At least that way we'd have something instead of waiting for Ford's mysterious private sector funding.

GTA & Thereabouts...
I'd pay the requested 1% HST hike and 5 cents/litre gas premium. I drive a lot for work and am will to pay my share as transit cannot serve my particular needs. I do think the private sector should be involved as they may be able to offer the public something more.

To me, the GTHA Cities should be offering 'incentive tools' to promote and coerce construction of multi-storey buildings consisting of realistically sized 3 bedroom dwellings centred around transit hubs.

Toronto has nothing to really offer my family at this time. I seem unable to escape the commute (even if I lived in the Toronto - the roads are that bad). With that in mind, my children appear to have a better quality of life living in the Burbs whilst Daddy rots in his car.

that's the whole point. one member of the family gives up a bit of free time so the rest can enjoy the good life. so what? it's always been that way. the press for metrolinx says that's a bad thing and for 50billion (plus an unknown amount for graft and over-runs) they'll fix our society. AND they'll throw in "The Big Move will bring 80 per cent of our region's population within two kilometers of rapid transit". WOW!! rapid! not just a bus! of course to afford that i'll have to sell my car and maybe downsize my house. and for now we have to forget about electricity doubling in 10 years and all the infrastructure work that needs to be done.

I get around.
If $450 per year is going to force you to sell your car and downsize your house what are you doing on this Escort Review Board? Window shopping?

McQuinty had the opportunity to raise the sales tax by 1% back when Harper lowered the GST by that amount. Of course if he had the money back then he would have just given it away to the teachers and public sector unions.

You're not going to like the answer because the answer is No, you're not.

Tax rates have been kept artificially low so as to not piss off voters and this has gone on so long that the system is breaking as a result. Has inflation stopped? You can't keep up with inflation with no tax increases year after year.

I thought that if you add ALL the taxes we pay, that our jurisdiction is one of the most taxed in the world.

I disagree with the explanation for the No option (the poor don't have the money to consume much, so they contribute less, plus are eligible for HST credits if they are below a certain threshold).

Until every department at every level of government gives itself an enema, there should be no new taxes.

Want to save some taxpayer money? Don't cancel gas plants to buy seats, discontinue all day daycare, whoops I mean kindergarden. Stop using consultants. Didn't we use to hire qualified staff to make decisions? Abolish the senate. Do not add new ridings, reduce the number of ridings. Money problem solved if anyone has the guts.

You are a nice trusting tax payer that politicians love. They can fuck you in the ass right up to the hilt after promising just top put the head in for a good cause and yet later drop another coin on the ground telling you this time it will be different - and you go for it !

These guys are like drunken sailors with your money - everything you give them will be leveraged into greater long term debt for your children. We are already paying taxes that are suppose to go to roads, transportation, etc so manage the money you already bleed from me instead of asking me for more. So when will we see the special HST tax hike just for hospitals or maybe to help subsidize senators salaries ? Once a new method of bleeding you is found, there will be a horde of other reasons to hike your taxes more.

If you want to suck more money from somewhere - why the little guy - why not corporations ? Why not decrease the HST tax right offs the business get for their purchases ? There are too many taxes on the little guy now - let someone else make for the short fall.

Our tax free day is June 10 which means for most people (rich excluded) will work more for the governments than you do for your family. Whatever is left over has been eaten by inflation so little is left to build for a future. Still - whatever you do have left - the government is trying to get more of it.

What is the optimum tax rate that everyone should be paying - 50% of their annual income, 75%, 90% or maybe 100%? There comes a point at which taxes
destroy the economy not to mention people's lives. Maybe what we should do is simply tax away 100% of everyone's assets. Then the government will own everything, the left wingers will be happy and all government hacks will live happily ever after.

Oh I forget they will lose everything along with the rest of us and be reduced to have not status. Wonder how they would like true equality.

Exactly
That is why I was / am so pissed about the Teachers.
I knew sooner or later, there would be another need for that $
Just think about the millions of $ we will be paying teachers not to work from June to Sept.
What a waste

I think they should reduce the HST rate and charge more in income tax. I also think they should have additional tax brackets at the top of the scale.

I think they should cut public sector & politician pay / benefits 10-15% across the board, lower the HST and personal income taxes and completely eliminate corp taxes
Watch the economy roar ahead and unemployment shrink
