Can hackers penetrate your computer via TERB Forum? I see there are members on here with thousands of posts so they must be comfortable with security of the site?
Just wondering.

Sorry for the delay in responding... I had to wait for the personal data on your computer to download to my memory stick.

You have nothing to fear!

How safe is the US gov site? Pentagon?

I think for average folks like i am, there is nothing to attract a good hacker, what would they find from my hobby terminal? I would be much more worried about the history showing when my SO log on to this terminal, haha. Ooppsee, is your SO a hacker? If yes, contact a Mod and delete your account, NOW!

if you're 100% sure that your computer is a whore, use rubber or ditch the bitch.

OMG...over 40k posting? Are you a hacker as well? LOL
I use Linux which is far more secure than Windoz and therefore don't worry about a thing....

To be safest, I wouldn't click on any links anyone posts. I got a virus and had to reformat my PC because of a porn link someone posted that I clicked on here, so Caveat Terbor!

You sounded like you are a computer whiz. Correct me if I am wrong that my comp get infected only if I kept clicking on the links? Can hackers find your ip address from just typing messages like this? Where is the mod when you need him:confused:

A good, up-to-date, anti-virus should take care of that problem for you! You may, however, get annoying pop-ups.

Getting your IP addy is easy no matter what OS you use be it M$, Mac, Linux or Unix.
M$ has the weakest security. You must be sure your AV is up to date at all times using Winblows or else....

Given that all you need to post here is a throwaway email address, and your IP address is obscured from the public, I'd say it's 'pretty safe'. Even if some / all Mods can see your IP address, there a long way to go to link that to you specifically. With that being said:
-If you have a vulnerable browser, and / or vulnerable image or 'other content' libraries (often loaded as plugins), on a vulnerable OS, your system could be compromised by 'user content' (like images / 'other content') hosted here, or via links from other sites. Just like every site on the web.
-Your data could be compromised if there is a vulnerability in the forum software. But why would they target you specifically? Once again this is like every forum site that nominally conceals some data.
-Your data could be compromised if there is a vulnerability in OS or software that is hosting the site. But why would they target you specifically? This is like every site that holds nominally concealed personal data on the web.

Other than scooping up viruses and spyware from user generated content (which TERB is strict about for it's own reasons), the only thing to really worry about would be LE with a warrant taking a very specific interest in you. About the only case where that is likely to happen is if you're involved with assaults (or worse), trafficking, or minors. So, basically: a) Don't do anything really shitty, or b) Don't write about doing anything really shitty. After that take 'normal privacy and security precautions', and count on just being one of any number of TERB members.

edit: And nothing can stop a person from going though every one of your posts to scoop up every bit of personal info on you that you have ever chosen to divulge. So have some ground rules in mind, and don't stray from them.

I was running full updated AVG at the time, and although it did provide an alert, the rootkit was still able to install itself and nothing could clean it. After that I lost faith in antivirus software, since it was useless and only slowed my system.

I have been able to clean another rootkit I got with "ComboFix", as well as other nasties with Malwarebytes. I also always check my Task Manager so I know what tasks are running when I reboot.

Only mods have access to the IP you are posting from. If you are concerned about your IP, then use a proxy server to change it, or run the ToR browser bundle.

To help alleviate worry Terb is tested on a monthly basis for STDs to ensure ultimate safety. :thumb:

A virus scanner won't save you from a shitty OS. :) Anything that can go from exploiting a vulnerability of software that is running as a normal user to uncleanable rootkit, is by definition awful. (It's another thing if it's exploiting something running as root / admin.)

Though, even if you don't run a virus scanner continuously, you should still periodically scan your system. Heck, I run Linux and I still scan my data daily so I don't pass stuff on to other people. There's actually a growing problem with Macs passing on Windows bugs.
