how risky is oral sex

I was always under the impression that oral sex was relatively safe.
It depends on your definition of 'relatively safe' If you're comparing oral sex to bare-back sex then yes, it is relatively safe. However, if you compare it to abstinence, or protected oral sex then yes, it is a risky activity
You either accept the risk, or don't.

Here is another article on this without all the morality BS.
Good article from the sp perspective ( and logically the risks must be different for the performer and recipient). It has been my experience that it is extremely rare that in the "high end" escort field that there is a lot of std's and it would be very difficult to tell whether it was from oral or someting else, like a broken condom or some other random event. In 10 years ( which also means 10 years of wonderful BBBJ's and DATY) I think I have heard credible "gossip" about 1 provider having the clap in her throat and it was disproved when she was forced to show recent test results to a board mod in Montreal to disprove the rumours.

As a sp who perhaps knows other sp's, and without naming names of course have you ever known someone to have the clap in their throat?

I would think that a "cover up" of any such SP's having STI's would be standard business operating procedure.

I can't imagine many cases where they'd gossip about it privately with clients, let alone come on a forum such as this advertising it.

"Hey fellas, just to let you know, during my present herpes outbreak i'll be on holiday for 2 weeks.
Sorry, i won't be seeing any clients during this time. See ya'll in 14 days! Kisses."

I wonder how many studies of high end SP's have been done re STIs, if any.

Yes I agree, I doubt they would even talk about it amongst themselves (despite some claims here) because the one case that I did hear about turned out to be untrue and was started by another sp due to professional jealousy I guess. The number of clients that limit their activities to oral is probably small except for maybe massage johns. Have also heard very little from Johns on the board who have contracted std's, if anything.

My own personal position is that the risk is very low with high end girls who take care of themselves, but everyone should make their own choice and get tested periodically.

IME, dollar for dollar, more attractive female SP's tend to perform at a much lower level of service than their inferiors. In fact, that may also be the case when they are paid significantly more. This includes an unwillingness to get down and dirty, which is related to the STI risk. Perhaps this applies also to the "high end" girls you speak of.

Moreover, if such girls have fewer customers than other SP's, all else being equal, then they would be at less risk.

Certainly i'd expect them to be at lower risk for STIs than IDU drug addicted SP's. I've also read reports that SP's in Australia have a low incidence of HIV and that certain Canadian escorts studied had a low rate of STDs when compared to the general population.

How safe is a guy recieving a BBBJ from getting genital herpes?

According to a world leading expert on STIs over 50% of us are "immune to catching genital herpes due to HSV-1":

"Lack of having cold sores is meaningless. At least half the population over age 20 has been infected with HSV-1, and that proportion is the same in people with and without histories of cold sores or other symptoms of oral herpes. So regardless of that history, there is at least a 50% likelihood you are immune to catching genital herpes due to HSV-1."

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Do-I-have-a-pimple-boil-or-Herpes/show/246817

"...exposure to HSV-1 is extremely common -- as many as 90% of American adults have been exposed to the virus..."

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/herpes-simplex-000079.htm

If you are over 50 years old, that immunity percentage goes up to at least 80-90%:

For those with a long history of being sexually active with prostitutes, i'd guess it is near to 100%.

Interesting and informative article. This is very important and should not be ignored, including those who said they're not concerned because they haven't caught something in X number of years! It's only a matter of time/luck and it will be too late when the "gift that keeps on giving" is received.
