As a long time fan, and given that racing has now begun at Woodbine....I am surprised that the sport isn't being give a boost in the papers and elsewhere. Nothing in the Star today.

Jockeys are exceptional athletes guiding horses that weigh almost 10 times more than they do...and often in tight quarters. There are a lot of people making only a modest living and races are highly competitive.

For a lousy $2 you can pick a horse and hope for the best. And you can bet online.

For $7 a month you can get HPItv and watch races from major tracks in Canada and the US and around the world.

And no, I do not work in the industry - just a fan trying to break even. And hoping the sport of kings survives.

Actually, if you want to know who I am - watch any race and the horse that finishes second is the one that I bet on to win.

Although I don't wager on the ponies in my adult life, I have fond memories of my dad taking me to the tracks (Woodbine, Greenwood, Fort Erie) as a boy. He would buy me a hot dog whenever he won.

It was fun spending a day watching these beautiful magnificent beasts galloping at full speed and admiring the jockeys, Hawley, Gomez, Duffy, Platts, Dittfach, Day, etc....

yes thats when I started. Yes I liked hustling Hugo Dittfach. Avelino Gomez was sadly killed in a racing spill......the risk these guys took

One great memory was being present when Hawley won 7 races one day.

I love flats racing although I prefer the standardbreds. They started yesterday. I got Kendall Seelster and Boadicea for a few bucks apiece on HPI yesterday night. I'm glad the ponies could finally get going again and contribute to the Ontario economy.

It can be mildly addictive. My father told me he went to the races for the first time when he was 22. He lost $10 that day and spent the rest of his life trying to win it back

The pandemic doesn’t seem to affect the tracks handle. Winnipeg’s track has had record amounts of wagering since they opened last month and even Fort Erie had a $2 million plus handle on its opening day earlier this week, those figures are virtually unheard of for these small tracks and that’s with no one in attendance, strictly on line wagering. I hope it continues.

I am a regular at Woodbine. Its my 2nd favorite vice.. It was a great weekend of betting the thoroughbred via hpibet.

Cant wait for Woodbine to be back open to the public so I can enjoy a Saturday afternoon of betting the horses with boys!!!

There is nothing wrong with Monique Vag although I also love Acacia Courtney at Gulfstream Live. Monique has better picks, though.

Although she is no longer with Woodbine, Dawn Lupul was the best handicapper, by far. She may not raise the blood pressure of the male patrons, but she provided solid picks all the time. She was the talk of the racing world before she left Woodbine by picking the winner of each race of the May 5, 2019 Sunday programme. As well, she won the National Horseplayers Championship in February, 2019, beating 50 other horse people. However, Dawn Lupul was not really as attractive as the above-mentioned Monique or Acacia.

I am new to horse racing but considering it as a hobby. I have two questions.

When betting online, do they still parade the horses in the horse paddock (and show the parade in a live video) so you can get a good look at them before a race?

When horse betting online, do the online horse betting sites ban you if you are a frequent winner like they do in many sports betting sites?

No, you dont see the horses until they get on the track. I don't think any one has ever been that lucky and been banned. Many years ago the track announcer was fired for using inside information and rooting for his horses.

The only scandals tend to be about drugging the horses. And that is tightly regulated and checked.

Unfortunately, it will not continue. The reason Fort Erie and Winnipeg are doing so well is there is nothing else to bet on at present. Once sports betting and casinos return, the small tracks will be back to their normal handle.
