Your translator, like TRADUCTOR, will require DATA service which will cost you a fortune due to roaming. That roaming charge could cost you more than the entire trip or hobbying expense.
when I saw the first post, I was going to respond with the exact same thing...lol.
That's the only way it will work! There is NO DATA IN CUBA! It's a communist country and keeps it's Internet very regulated! There are select few that have dial up, mostly only businesses or foreign investors or dignitaries. Good luck finding any wifi, even if your hotel has wifi, you're sharing dial up with everyone. It'll take you ten minutes to send one email, I've actually never had the luck of connecting to wifi with my phone there even though it was "available" in the hotel Internet lounge. This isn't true. The app is already on your phone. It doesn't require data. It's no different that opening up something like your calendar app.
you are right, just put my phone on plane mode, and it didn't work. That totally sucks. I thought the app was already all stored in your phone so you didn't need any data, kind of like the way pics and stuff don't need data for you to open up. I just figured apps like google maps needed data because the phone needs to know where you are, ect. That's the only way it will work! There is NO DATA IN CUBA! Ironicaly some Cuban's own smart phones (mostly phones that were gifts or "that fell off a truck in Venezuela"), few care about owning them because of no data. Most are stuck with the apps that come with their phone and can't use half of them. you'll NEVER find anyone checking google maps on the street with their cell phones. At least for now... Hopefully that will change soon.
There are "offline" translators out there.. I'd google it to find the best one. It seems to be a commonly googled topic.you are right, just put my phone on plane mode, and it didn't work. A lot of people don't realize that. When I was last down there, walking with a Canadian friend and the son of the Cuban home owner where my friend rents. The cop pulled the Cuban guy over just because he was talking to us, checked his ID and questioned him. The girls get it much worse when caught with tourists.found this docutmentary which maybe helps gives you a bit of an idea. Still seems to be a royal pain in the ass thought seeing as you can get a poor women into trouble just for talking to her.
Great video! Though times are changing. You don't really get trouble for talking to locals anymore. Bringing a girl back to your "resort" though I'm sure would still be quite tricky. There are plenty accommodations other then resorts. And I'm pretty sure prostitution isn't as rampant as it used to be.found this docutmentary which maybe helps gives you a bit of an idea. It used to be quite strict, because the assumption was (and still can be) that any Cuban talking to tourists is trying to do business "under the table". A longer time ago I was pulled over in an illegal (not registered) taxi, we had to convince the police officer that we were old friends, he could have been in trouble, but now they've changed to allow Cuban's to start their own legitimate businesses.. And I think taxi is one. Hairdraisser is definitely another.. I'm sure the Cuban government take a big percentage of what's being earned which will always keep "under the table" business alive and illegal.A lot of people don't realize that. You can use data in Cuba. Did it last year. I had to call in to Rogers to make sure i bought the right travel pack so i wouldn't get reamed at bill time, but data worked, albeit slow. This was Varadero. That's the only way it will work! There is NO DATA IN CUBA! It's a communist country and keeps it's Internet very regulated! Awesome, I didn't realize this feature had be added. I often do not have data when traveling in a foreign country. This is great!Google translate Spanish to English can be downloaded onto your smart phone and will work without data.
Interesting... I thought I read it was one of the 3 counties in the world Rogers did not offer data to. It wasn't crazy expensive? You can use data in Cuba. Did it last year. You obviously don't use Tra.duc.tor.This isn't true. The app is already on your phone. It doesn't require data. It's no different that opening up something like your calendar app.
I told you I got charged with roaming! I used data in excess of my Bell roaming package. It's a Caribbean carrier - not sure if AT&T from the Florida keys.Interesting... I thought I read it was one of the 3 counties in the world Rogers did not offer data to. It wasn't crazy expensive?
Thanks for the advice and support Carter. I hate to be doubted by amateurs.Google translate Spanish to English can be downloaded onto your smart phone and will work without data.
GPIdeal has the lay of the land right, if your Spanish is decent you can pick up civilians and sometimes get the club girls back for $60 rather than $80 - $100 CUCs.
Nick, I used to get away with excess data charges but my boss put a stop to that lol. It's very easy to exceed your data package of $100 to $150 due to back ground apps working.Interesting...
