I am getting tired of my current phone and am in the market for another one. Just wondering if anyone knows of any good deals. I currently use a pay as you go but would consider a plan phone.

Public Mobile. $24/month includes unlimited talk & text. No personal information required for sign-up; no plan or contract. A competitive monthly rate with the privacy of a pre-paid phone.

I just got one last week for precisely the same reason and very impressed so far. Excellent reception and coverage; no dropped calls or static.

Hell of a lot cheaper than a pay-as-you-go or pay by-the-minute phone. (I was using a Telus phone with a rate of 25-30 cents per minute. F**k that.)

If you spend most of your time in the city then mobilicity is a good option. Their plans are all unlimited, no-contract, any additional charge (like roaming) is billed to a "my wallet" account that you pre-pay. Short story is no contract, no credit check, no reason to give them your real name, they don't care, they don't check. Their rates are much better than most of the prepaid options. Downside is that coverage is very limited, if you leave the GTA you're roaming basically. However their roaming rates are reasonable, 20c/min or something like that.

That said I have never understood "hobby phone". What's the point? There is no legal benefit to it, prostitution is legal in Canada. With incall you face the risk of being "found in", but you physically have to be there--you can't be charged with anything based on your phone records.

From a personal point of view I think it's much harder to explain to your wife/GF why you have this second phone, than to make sure you properly lock down your own phone. I mean, what is the explanation when your wife finds this 2nd phone in the glove compartment???

God forbid that some outfit is busted, maybe underage girls. For some reason the police decide to contact all the last 1000 calls to the outfit. Could be you if your phone is registered.
"who"s on the phone honey, Oh just the cops wondering why your cell # is on the incomming calls at girls are us!"

If that ever were to happen I think you could say, "I can't talk to you right now but if you give me your number I will call you back" and shrug it off as a business call. I would hope that if there were actually a situation with underage girls and you were able to help put the perpetrators behind bars that you would assist the police.

That is the single disadvantage to having a bat phone. However, if you keep it in your desk at work, you're safe, or your car - very well hidden.

The disadvantages to using your own cell phone:

1. There is a trail to you (obviously).

2. Unwanted call backs. Very unwanted call backs at the worst time.

3. In my case, my cell phone is paid for by the company and I must submit my statements to be reimbursed. "Hey, I wonder who JTK is calling at 2 in morning? Leeettsssss see who we get when dial this number"

4. Police issues - you can figure that out yourself.

The bat phone avoids all of that.

Never mind the hobby, there are some times you want to call somewhere and you don't want your number being out there. Doesn't have to be hobby related.

But I agree, don't get caught, lest you end up in a situation like this:

If the police call you, you are NOT going to tell them that and have them say, "uh, ok, you can call us back Mr. Fuji when it's convenient". Yeah right. You won't get a call back from the police when it's convenient, you'll get a visit in about an hour's time at home from 2 of Metro's finest.

Try explaining that one.

This is why I like Skype as a hobby phone.
With Skype all those issues are avoided.
