The HMV store on Bloor st. will be closing down for good.

I wonder how long before the Yonge and gould store and the one in the Eaton centre will be closing down. Online sale of music has definitely affected them.

Ironically smaller music stores selling vinyl has seen a surge in sales.

I've noticed that HMV is mostly selling DVDs now, which are probably being affected by streaming services.

Though you can't get the extra features on DVDs on Netflix and other services.

I've saved tens of thousands of dollars over the past 15 years from downloading music for free. That's better than any fond memories I might have of sifting thru albums at music stores and paying for it.

I dread the day these places all close up for good. I'm old school I know nothing about streaming tv or movies or buying music online. I like to feel that DVDs or cd in my hands. I still have all my old VHS tapes and they still play nicely on my DVDs/vhs machine. Still pissed about Worlds Biggest Bookstore closing.

The fault with that is that the artists do not get paid for their work. Then, they give up and you don't get the music you would want. Granted, record companies have been known to rip off the artists. But, some money will reach the artists, anyway.

The beauty of sifting through physical records and CDs is going in to get a specific ALBUM but finding others you never thought of.
It can be a social thing to. Running into like minded people.
Just getting out of the house to do something.
Beats the hell out of sitting in front of a computer, downloading in isolation.
It's no longer an event for a Friday night or Saturday.
I remember lining up to be amongst the first to get a new release or to get tickets for a show.
It was fun even if we complained.
Now a show is sold out in 30 seconds unfairly to who knows who.
If you wanted to be a scalper in the day you had to stand in line with the rest of us or pay someone else to do it.

The HMV in Bramalea City Centre still seems to be surviving. In fact I saw Help Wanted ads posted there the other day.

Forget extra features, you can't even get decent audio
For those of you using a 10 year old tv or a smartphone so be it use Netflix

For anyone with halfway decent tv + receiver even a dvd offers far superior quality (and Bluray even tops that)

You mean stealing music.

You like working for free yourself?

You say it like it some badge of honour.

Well said, it was a pleasant trip/event to go to Sam's, Record Peddler or Kopps records to shop for vinyl, definitely a social atmosphere where you talk to others browsing in same section.

My old VHS tapes look and sound like shit. And have no extra features. And take a long time to fast forward / rewind. And take up a lot of space.
I have over 2 TB of videos and music on external hard drive that's about the size of 1 VHS case.

I have fond memories of spending parts of the weekend looking through the thousands of cds they had at Sam the Record Man and walking on the creaky floors.
I really miss that place.

Me too. Growing up in my teens and into my early 20's I loved going there. Even at times when I couldn't afford to buy anything it was still fun. The creaky floors. lol

Here is a question for everyone - people talk about streaming services like Netflix and Shomi, but I've found that there are many films, especially foreign or indie films, that are not available through Netflix. Where can we go to get a hold of these films?

Also, if someone wants to buy DVDs, is there one great place with a decent seldction to order/purchase these? I know grocery or drug stores sell them, but their selection is awful.

Another question I would have is what is going to happen to the real estate space taken up by the HMV store on Bloor Street. I'm curious what store/business will ultimately take its place.

Bay Street Video (Bay just south of Bloor) has been my go to place for buying foreign and indie DVD's. If they don't have it in stock they will order it for you. Bought The Lives of Others, The Secret in their Eyes (Argentinean original, not the American remake), The Host (great Korean monster movie), and a bunch of Sergio Leone classics as well as many more.

Bay Street Video is your answer, my esteemed colleague. A haven for cinephiles and students of cinema everywhere. The last bastion of film as art.

I don't subscribe to any such service as Netflix since it doesn't give me any 'Special Features' options. I like the documentaries, subtitles and commentary options. Also, it's not blu-ray quality which is absolutely essential.

I also want foreign film option selection as I find the majority of Hollywood content to be the worst of film making out there.

You'll also have intelligent conversations with other customers and staff who will recommend something you haven't seen yet.

That's the main reason I haven't bothered with Netflix. Nothing beats DVD and Blu-ray for sound quality on my 7.1 surround. Surprisingly though, when I play a YouTube music video from my laptop connected to my receiver by HDMI, the sound quality is surprisingly good.

But yes, I assume HMV will go the way of this.

An entire generation of people who do not appreciate the difference in sonic quality between an MP3 and .cda (or vinyl, for that matter) has brought about the demise of the brick and mortar music store. Makes me glad that I purchased so many albums and cds in their heyday, since I'll have to continue to enjoy that same collection for quite a while longer.

No wonder music has become so disposable and unimportant to people, given the over-compressed, over-processed digital medium it has become.

On the upside, it certainly has opened the door for live music to fill the void. Used to be that people bemoaned the poor sonic quality of concerts vs. what was on the album. That tide may have turned.
